I

t was pure gold when Olympic
champ Lenny Krayzelburg came
to Metro Detroit last week to
introduce his new swim program,
the Lenny K JCC Swim Academy, at
the Jewish Community Centers in
West Bloomfield and Oak Park.
Born in Ukraine, Lenny K came
with his parents to the United
States in 1989. His family faced
the typical financial challenges of
new immigrants, so when Lenny
became interested in aquatics he
traveled by bus, and then walked
45 minutes, just to get to swim-
ming lessons. He continued train-
ing throughout college, and went
on to swim in the 2000 and 2004
Olympics, where he won four gold

to attend the Maccabiah Games in
Israel. When he created his new
swim program, he decided to bring
it to JCCs around the country. The
swim academy is open to everyone,
from infants to seniors, from com-
plete beginners to master swimmers.

Lenny K posed patiently, and hap-
pily, in photos with every child who
asked (some shy; others simply
dashing right up) for his autograph.
