Knit/Crochet For A Cause
Birmingham Temple members participate
in the National Day of Service.
0
n Jan. 19, the Birmingham Temple in Farmington Hills, under
the guidance of its Community Impact Committee, joined
in the National Day of Service, a day designated by President
Obama as a way to honor and continue the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
The temple hosted a "Knit/Crochet for a Cause" event that drew about
45 people — temple members and guests —to work on items that will be
donated to two local nonprofit organizations: Alternatives for Girls (AFG)
and Coalition on Temporary Housing (COTS).
Participants of all ages sat in the temple family room, knitting, crochet-
ing, helping each other, chatting and hearing about the organizations that
will receive their creations as well as about other service opportunities.
During the afternoon, a representative from the National Day of Service
program stopped by to snap photos and express thanks for the efforts.
Many beautiful, handmade scarves, hats and mittens have already been
completed and are on their way to keeping people warm this winter;
other works in progress will be donated as they are finished. One three-
generational family — children, parents and grandparent — worked
together.
Many participants enjoyed this communal event so much they have
decided to form a knit/crochet group that will meet regularly at the tem-
ple and continue to donate items to charity.

ntroducing Girl Scout Troop 613! At an
open house held Jan. 27 at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in Southfield, 30 new Girl
Scouts were signed up.
Girl Scouts, grade K-8, will meet Sundays
at Shaary Zedek, but you will see them all
over town. Troop Leader Laurel Rebenstock
of Farmington Hills, herself a Girl Scout and
"daughter of a Cookie Mom," was thrilled
at the turn-out and will be working with
the girls as they develop their own plans
for meetings and outings.
"Girl Scouts build courage, confidence and
character — and they will make terrific, life-
long friends:' Rebenstock said.
