He's the new owner of a fully equipped wheelchair-accessible van donated by a total stranger. Weaver, the local Anti-Defamation League's education director, was shot during an attempted robbery and shooting in Detroit back in September. Now he is paralyzed from the waist down. Prior to the shooting, Weaver visited area schools and taught count- less local students lessons about non- violence by conducting the ADI:s "No Place for Hate" programs. Stacey Boyd, a disabled veteran in a wheelchair because of an injury he suffered in a car crash, learned about Harry's story while watching a local TV newscast. Boyd was moved, and he wanted to help. "The van has been sitting in my driveway for about a year:' Boyd explained. "When I saw the story I told my wife, 'I'm going to give him that van:" And he did. But first, the vehicle needed several costly repairs. Advantage Mobility Outfitters in Wayne and Serra Chevrolet of Southfield agreed to fix the engine and a remote controlled ramp free of charge. The car dealership also detailed the van and filled up the gas tank. "We didn't think twice about offer- ing our services:' said Jeff Goldblatt with Advantage Mobility Outfitters. "It couldn't happen to a better person to be able to get something donated like this:' added Scott Bruyere of Serra Chevrolet. A few weeks ago, all four men met at the car dealership and Weaver got to see the roomy van in person for the first time. He still needs some train- ing to learn how to operate it using hand controls. But the donation is a big relief for the husband and father. Harry and his wife, Dawn, have a 2-year-old son and a second baby due in March. "It's incredible Weaver said as he checked out the van. "I can't say enough about everybody involved. It just reinforces what I already know to be the case — there are more good people than bad people" The suspected gunman, Richard Nickerson, is charged with armed rob- bery, assault with intent to commit murder and other crimes. He's accused of opening fire on Weaver and a friend as they left a Masonic Temple on McDougall in Detroit. The friend was not injured. Nickerson remains in jail while his case moves through the court system. "I certainly hope he's punished to the full extent of the law:' Weaver said. "It's unfortunate that he chose the path he did." It's not clear exactly when Harry will return to work with the ADL, but he hopes to be back on the job before the end of the year. ❑ If youd like to help the family, donations can be sent to the Bank of Birmingham, attention: Harry Weaver Independence Fund, 33583 Woodward Ave., Birmingham, MI 48009 or care of the ADL office at 25800 Northwestern Highway, Suite 980, Southfield, MI 48075.
