IRVING STOLLMAN,

89, of West Bloomfield,
died Jan. 25, 2013.
A dreamer, artist and
inventor, he loved clas-
sical music, jazz, art
and reading. He was a
veteran of the armed
Stollman
forces. Mr. Stollman was
a creator ahead of his
time. Whether it was designing a shopping
cart in the early '60s that would unload
the groceries on the checkout line without
breaking an egg or designing and building
low-income housing made out of Tyvek in
the '70s, he was able to make the ordinary
seem and look unordinary and, more
often than not, special. In the early '90s he
was looking into ways to provide heat for
apartments through renewable energy, and
he designed a geo-thermal heating system.
He loved to tinker with electronics and toy
cars and trains.
After his wife died in 2010, he moved
to Jewish Senior Life Meer Apartments,
where he was referred to as "the artist." He
spent his remaining time shmoozing with
his new friends, sculpting, and listening to
operas and musicals. He was trusting and
hopeful, whether in business or his per-

sonal life, always giving people the benefit
of the doubt and assuming the best.
Mr. Stollman is survived by his children,
Lynne Holley of Lake Forest, Calif., Lea
and Richard Luger of West Bloomfield,
Eden Stollman of North Las Vegas, Nev.,
Ilana Stollman and Kurt Nelson of New
York; sister, Irine Heimann of California;
grandchildren, Sara and Ari Fein, Adam
Luger, Benjamin Luger, Sacha Nelson,
