j

ulie Meyer believes acting
is in her blood. Her mother,
Sharon Greenspon, seriously
studied acting in Ireland but gave up
on career dreams in America. She
married, started a family and focused
on home priorities.
Meyer grew up with the same act-
ing interest but kept up with it. She
participated in theater programs
throughout Walled Lake schooling,
Jewish Community Center activities
and University of Michigan classes.
Meyer's move to Los Angeles after
college graduation placed her in the
land of auditions, and with time, she
attained many sitcom roles.
Her next appearance will be in an
episode of Rules of Engagement, which
will air at 8:30 p.m. Monday, March 4,
on CBS. Although allowed to tell the
title of the segment, "Role Play:' she
can't tell about the storyline.
"Rules of Engagement is a great
comedy, and I'm happy that I get to
be in an episode she says. "I love the
cast. David Spade is one of my favorite
actors. I grew up watching all of his
movies, and it was really cool to meet
him:'
The show has been on the air for
seven years, and "it's really success-
ful: explains Meyer, 29, during a visit
home in December. "A lot of the sit-
coms are going to single camera work
without any live audience, but that
show is keeping both the multi-camera
format and the live audience.
"I find it fun to have the audi-
ence there. I can hear the laughter.
Otherwise, I'm just hoping that people
find it funny when they're watching
at home. With the instant feedback, I
know whether something is working
or not:'
Meyer had varied sitcom roles
in 2012, including episodes of The
Middle, The New Normal, Jessie and
Southland. The year before found her
on How I Met Your Mother and The
Cape.
"I played a goth girl on The Cape,
and that's definitely not me she says.
"I'm very studious and preppy, and I
read a lot. That was my first work on a
network series:'
Meyer, who grew up in Farmington
Hills, went to Walled Lake Western

Julie Meyer

High School and spent summers at
Camp Tamarack. Her religious activi-
ties were through Temple Shir Shalom.
After majoring in film and video
studies at U-M, she moved to
California in 2005.
"I worked so hard doing waitress-
ing and catering jobs during my first
few years in Los Angeles:' says Meyer,
daughter of John Meyer and step-
daughter of Donald Greenspon.
"I had no connections in the indus-
try, but I got my first break in 2009
on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. I
played a secretary to Jay, and it was so
much fun to work with a legend. He
was so professional and so nice. They
called me back to play a shopper, and
that was exciting:'
Meyer, who does commercials to
add to her income, also can be seen
appearing in improv shows. She has
studied with LAs Upright Citizens
Brigade and famed improv teacher
Miles Stroth.
"Improv is important to me says
Meyer, who is single and likes to hike,
practice yoga and read for relaxation.
"It's approaching comedy in a real
grounded way:'
Meyer's hopes for more work are
very high during January-April, when
pilot season flourishes. Eventually,
she would like to take on production
responsibilities. She hopes to make
movies and even cast her mom, who
remains very proud of her daughter's
achievements.
"It's exciting to see Julie on TV and
find that her hard work is paying off:
says Sharon Greenspon, now living
in Huntington Woods. "I feel that if
a person sticks with something, then
achievement — although not a guar-
antee — is really possible.
"I'm looking forward to seeing her on
more and more television shows:'

See Julie Meyer on Rules of
Engagement at 8:30 p.m.

Monday, March 4, on CBS.
