Contributing Writer
W
hen Dr. Rosalind Franklin
(Carol Lempert), the main
character in JET's cur-
rent production, Photograph 51, says,
"Nothing is ever just one thing:' she
sums up the essence of
Anna Ziegler's intriguing
play about one of the most
momentous discoveries in
scientific history.
The story, which mainly takes place
in 1950s England, centers on Franklin,
a scientist whose tireless investigation
led to the discovery of the DNA double
helix, a breakthrough resulting in a
Nobel Prize for three of the male scien-
tists involved in the research. Missing
from that group was Franklin, and it is
her role that provides the focus of this
absorbing drama.
Using chamber theater style, all six
cast members are on stage throughout
both acts, speaking to the audience as
well as to one another. Despite a fairly
complicated storyline, both in terms
of subject matter and the intertwined
relationships between the characters,
the play is well paced and easy to follow.
Skillful direction by JET Artistic Director
David Magidson and a talented ensem-
ble of actors provide a production that is
compelling rather than confusing.
JET guest artist Lempert portrays
Franklin as the brilliant, frustrated and
dedicated woman she undoubtedly was,
struggling to earn her place in a scien-
tific community rife with sexism and
anti-Semitism. Lempert also allows the
audience an occasional glimpse of the
vulnerability that lies beneath the scien-
tist's often frosty exterior.
the other five actors
all play male scientists, each
brings out the distinctive per-
sonality of his character. Brian P. Sage is
excellent in what is probably the most
challenging of these roles: Maurice
Wilkins, the scientist who struggles to
reconcile his professional role with his
personal feelings for Franklin.
Comic relief is provided by Keith
Kalinowski as Ray Gosling, the over-
eager lab assistant at King's College.
Pete Podolski and Andrew Parker play,
respectively, James Watson and Francis
Crick, the scientists who team up with
Wilkins to win the ultimate prize in the
unofficial race to discover the genetic
mystery of DNA. Russ Schwartz plays
Don Casper, a young scientist and long-
time admirer of Franklin.
An interesting yet realistic laboratory
set was created by Jennifer Maiseloff,
with era-appropriate costumes by
Christa Koerner, lighting design by Jim
Costello and sound by JET intern Julia
Gray.
