DR. HAROLD
"DOC" ROLAND,
94, of Sarasota, Fla.,
formerly of West
Bloomfield, died
Jan. 18, 2013.
Columnists
referred to him as
Roland
"Optometrist to
the Stars" because
of his many celebrity patients,
including Motown artists and oth-
ers traveling on the theater circuits.
John Denver and his golfing buddy
Johnny Mathis came to see him at
Roland Optics.
Singing was his first love, per-
forming on the "Happy Hour Radio
Show" and at many local shows and
events. He graduated as an optom-
etrist in 1940 and soon after enlisted
in the Army, where he spent the war
years treating soldiers and German
prisoners of war.
Returning to Detroit in 1945, he
started a family with his beloved
wife, Rhoda Cowen, who prede-
ceased him in 1968.
His love for thoroughbred
horseracing resulted in lifelong part-
ners and friends. He loved traveling
with his wife, Les-Lee, to Europe to
find eyewear designers for Roland
