T

o say that Evan Kolin likes
sports is like saying Miguel
Cabrera kind of wanted to
win the Triple Crown. He has such
a passion for it, in fact, that this
12-year-old wakes up every day at
6:15 a.m., before school, so he has
time to write a daily post to his sports
blog, www.evenkolin.wordpress.com .
"I want to be a sports reporter
one day for a magazine like Sports
Illustrated:' he says.
Evan, a seventh-grader at Bloomfield
Hills Middle School, writes weekly
highlights, previews, draft picks and
anything else that is relevant in sports
on any given day. "I write whatever I
find interesting:' he says.
He does a lot of research before he
writes, according to his father, Paul
Kolin, who says, "When his Sports

Illustrated comes in the mail. he reads
it from cover to cover; he loves to read,
too:'
A few of his latest articles were
about milestones that certain play-
ers were"chasing" in the NFL such
as Aldon Smith, Calvin Johnson and
Adrian Peterson.
"I have liked writing since third
grade Evan says, recalling a magazine
that he and a friend in Connecticut
wrote on their computer about "a lot
of stuff including video game reviews,
crossword puzzles and a little bit about
sports, but not much:"
The Kolin family, Paul and Deborah,
Evan and Amanda, 10, moved from
Connecticut to Bloomfield Hills in
2010.
Evan's passion for sports really began
to take shape in 2009. "That year we
went to a significant number of New
York Yankee regular season games and
a number of playoff games, including

the American League Championship
Series and the World Series clincher;
his father says. "We even attended the
Yankee celebration victory parade in
downtown Manhattan."
Since he found his love for the
Yankees and all things sports, Evan
started putting together magazines
about college football and NFL picks.
He also created a draft guide with
suggested picks for the NFL, along with
week-to-week previews similar to that of
Sports Illustrated for the fantasy football
league he and his father participate in.
"I'll be downstairs watching football
for six to seven hours on a Sunday, and
Evan will be upstairs writing for six or
seven:' his dad says. "I am so proud of
how passionate and dedicated he is:'
Not only does Evan enjoy writing
about sports, he also plays basketball
and baseball, along with his share of
sports video games. He even chose
a local sports-related charity for his
mitzvah project for his upcoming bar
mitzvah at Adat Shalom Synagogue this
June.
Last year, he and his father had the
rare opportunity to be present at the
NFL draft in New York and announce
the Lion's fourth-round draft pick,
Ronnelle Lewis, the linebacker from
Oklahoma.
Now that he has lived in Michigan
for a few years, Evan has grown to
love both the University of Michigan
Wolverines and his favorite team, the
Detroit Lions, where he enjoys season
tickets.

Shabbat Lights

2 2:2 4

The words above are the basis for
Hebrew Free Loan's mission. On
Shabbat Mishpatim, February 9, the
words that helped form our longest-
serving agency will be read during
services in sanctuaries across metro
Detroit.
Hebrew Free Loan Board member
Stuart Snider feels a great source
of pride that the agency has assisted
Jews in our community for 118
years, based on this directive.
"The Hebrew word nesech means
`interest,' Stuart said, "but it also
translates to 'bite.' One commentary
tells us that interest is like the bite of
a snake: it isn't felt so much initially,
but after a time it becomes onerous.
Another commentary tells us we are
trustees for what God has given us,
and when we share our blessings,
we should do so freely and expect
only that they be returned the way
they were given.
"Hebrew Free Loan donors con-
tribute to our loan pool and give
what can't be seen, but what mat-
ters most," Stuart said. "They give
the sense of relief from a burden,
possibilties, and an opportunity for
fresh beginnings.
"The more money we have to lend,
the more people we can help. As
long as there is a need, Hebrew
Free Loan will be there to fill it, for
many more years to come."
