Players from Akiva Hebrew Day School and Fuchs Mizrachi School of Cleveland
at last year's tournament

Nhat A Bounce!

Student's efforts establish multi-state
basketball tourney at Akiva.

Steve Stein

Contributing Writer

y

oni Nadel had an idea. A big
idea.
The Akiva Hebrew Day
School student and basketball player
wanted to invite boys basketball teams
from other private Orthodox Jewish
high schools to Detroit for a weekend
of hoops and the opportunity to spend
Shabbos together.
After getting the
go-ahead from Akiva
administrators, he
went to work contact-
ing youth group and
camp friends from
several states.
The Southfield teen's

Yoni Nadel
idea became reality last
year when the inau-
gural Detroit Yeshivat Akiva Basketball
Invitational and Shabbaton was held.
The invitational, held at the Southfield
day school, wasn't a one-year wonder.
The second annual invitational took
place over four days earlier this month,
once again with four schools, three of
them returnees.
Nadel modestly deflected praise
for the success of this year's invita-
tional to Akiva administrators, other
Akiva students like fellow senior
David Brystowski, and Young Israel of
Southfield for hosting the out-of-town
players and Shabbos activities.
But Rick Kaczander, Akiva athletic
director and basketball coach, gave
much of the credit to Nadel.
"Yoni did 97 percent of the work:' he
said.
Fuchs Mizrachi School of Cleveland
won this year's invitational thanks to a
40-32 win over Columbus (Ohio) Torah
Academy in the championship game.
Akiva took third place with a 43-32 vic-
tory over Block Yeshiva High School
from St. Louis, which replaced Hillel
Academy of Pittsburgh.
Evan Jaffe from Fuchs Mizrachi was
named the tournament's most valuable
player.

The five-member all-star team includ-
ed Eli Diamond from Fuchs Mizrachi,
Cody Parks and Aaron Polster from Torah
Academy, Noah Fishman from Block
Yeshiva and Nadel from Akiva. The MVP
and all-stars were selected by coaches.
Each player who participated in the
invitational received a T-shirt and other
"swag:" Kaczander said, and trophies were
presented. Teams played four games. The
first three were in a round-robin format
against the other schools.
There was a special moment on the
third night of the invitational. It was a
dedication ceremony for the Ken Kohn
Court at Akiva. Kohn coached boys bas-
ketball at the school for more than 20
years, all as a volunteer, before retiring
after last season.
Brystowski and Nadel are members
of the Akiva basketball team. Also on
the roster are the Avi's — Avi Cohen,
Avi Katz and Avi Mendelson — Joe
Benadaret, Sander Eizen, Joseph Jubas,
Jonny Korman, Hershel Rogers and Dovi
Rosenberg. Elie Lipnik is team manager.
Akiva lost to Fuchs Mizrachi 38-27 in
its first invitational game. Eizen scored
nine points and Korman pulled down 14
rebounds.
Next for Akiva was a 43-29 win over
Block Yeshiva. Katz scored 13 points,
Brystowski had nine, and Rogers had 13
rebounds.
Torah Academy beat Akiva 37-30.
Nadel scored 10 points, Eizen had seven,
and Korman had 10 rebounds.
Polster scored 16 points for Torah
Academy in a losing cause in the invita-
tional championship game. Jaffe scored
12 points and Fuchs Mizrachi teammate
Ari Bar-Shain had 11 rebounds.
David Polster from Torah Academy
won the invitational's three-point shoot-
ing contest. Aldva's Rosenberg finished
second.
The invitational will live on after Nadel
graduates from Akiva. Sophomore Jake
Weil "has learned the ropes:' Nadel said,
and will inherit the event next year.
