Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood
To Host Vashti's Banquet
Sisterhood of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek again welcomes women of
the entire Jewish community to
join them at their annual Vashti's
Banquet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb.
5, Shaarey Zedek in Southfield. The
synagogue will be transformed into a
Middle Eastern bazaar.
Vashti's Banquest, a girls' night out,
will include Middle Eastern kosher
food, kosher cocktails handcrafted by
Mary Knoll, a belly dancing lesson
with dance instructor Lana Mini and
the opportunity to have hands deco-
rated with henna body art.
Celebrate the heroics of Queen
Esther, in advance of Purim (Feb.
24), in a night of camaraderie with
sisters in the community. The price
is $25 for non-members, $20 for CSZ
Sisterhood members.
This is Shaarey Zedek's fourth
Vashti's Banquet and the celebration
has been growing, with representa-
tion from nearly every Sisterhood or
shul in Metro Detroit.

Jewish A Cappella Group
To Sing At Beth Shalom
Congregation Beth Shalom in Oak
Park welcomes back the University
of Michigan Jewish a cappella group,
Kol Hakavod, at the synagogue's Cafe
Shalom, an intimate cabaret event.
The program starts at 8 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 2. Kosher snacks and
drinks are included, and a dessert
reception will follow.
Kol HaKavod, which rehearses at
the U-M Hillel, focuses on music that
is culturally and religiously Jewish:
anything from Sabbath prayers
to Israeli pop songs to traditional
Hebrew classics. Local members
include Lindsay Alexis of West
Bloomfield and Nathan Chesterman,
Ben Duchan and Emily Zussman, all
of Huntington Woods.
Tickets are $18. Sponsorships at

Feb. 10, at 1:30 p.m. at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in Southfield. The pro-
gram will be facilitated by Channel 7
reporter Cheryl Chodin.
The film, starring John Corbett,
tells the story of Kersjes as he helps
his students with special needs over-
come incredible obstacles and achieve
the seemingly impossible dream of
attending NASA's challenging Space
Camp program.
The event is presented by the
Jewish Federation's Alliance for
Jewish Education's "Opening the
Doors" program. National Jewish
Disability Awareness Month will also
feature additional programs:
• "May I Have Your Attention
Please: How to Improve Your Working
Memory," a presentation by neuro-
psychologist Dr. Isabelle Baulieu, will
be held on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 7
p.m. at the Max M. Fisher Federation
building in Bloomfield Township.
Two books on disabilities will be
discussed at other events:
• On Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m.,
educator Rebecca Starr will lead a
discussion on autism using the book

Son, A Miracle by Elaine Hall at the
Max M. Fisher Federation Building in
Bloomfield Township.
• On Tuesday, March 5, at 7 p.m. at
the Jewish Family Service building in
West Bloomfield, Front of the Class:
How Tourette Syndrome Made Me the
Teacher I Never Had by Brad Cohen,
will be facilitated by Ellen Yashinsky

officer.

JET Seeks School Trips
To See Anne Frank Play
For the 17th year, the Jewish
Ensemble Theatre's outreach pro-
gram will be presenting The Diary
of Anne Frank. This year, the play
about a young Jewish girl during
the Holocaust will be presented
March 1-14 at the Berman Center for
Performing Arts at the JCC in West
Bloomfield.
JET's Managing Director
Christopher Bremer says the state of
Michigan has provided $45,000 in
grant money for schools to pay for
bus fees to go on field trips.
He is asking educators to spread
the word about planning school trips
to see The Diary of Anne Frank.
