van Paul traded his
senior season on the West
Bloomfield High School
hockey team to help Frankel Jewish
Academy make history.
Paul said he joined the West
Bloomfield-based academy's first hockey
team — officially a Farmington Hills
Hockey Association Midget BB house
team but unofficially the FJA Jaguars
— so he could play with several friends,
including longtime buddies and Frankel
students Jonah Folbe, Michael Klar and
Ethan Weinfeld.
Their friendship dates to their days
as students at Hillel Day School in
Farmington Hills. Paul attended Hillel
from kindergarten through eighth
grade.
"I'm glad I'm playing for the Frankel
team:' said Paul, a forward who played
for West Bloomfield as a sophomore and
junior.
"It's fun, and I've gotten a chance to
meet a lot of kids:' he said.
Only nine of the team's 17 players
attend Frankel. The others come from
West Bloomfield High, Akiva Hebrew
Day School in Southfield, U-D Jesuit
in Detroit, Orchard Lake St. Mary's,
Birmingham Brother Rice, Westland
Huron Valley Lutheran, Novi Catholic
Central and Farmington High.
Finding good leaders for such a
diverse team was important for Coach
Mark Weiss, and he chose Paul to be an
assistant captain. Folbe is the captain,
and Weinfeld is an assistant captain.
The team is based and plays its
home games at the Farmington Hills
Ice Arena. It's a member of the Little
Caesars Amateur Hockey League.
Paul, 17, played for Detroit inline
hockey and baseball teams in the JCC
Maccabi Games, and he's played in sev-
eral inline hockey leagues at the Jewish
Community Center in West Bloomfield.

The popularity of Texas hold 'em poker
may have dipped in recent years, but
the fundraising tournament hosted
by the Block/Israel and Pisgah/Zeiger
B'nai B'rith chapters since 2005 is still
going strong.
The 14th tournament will be held
Sunday, Jan. 27, in the Teen Center at
the Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield. Proceeds once again will

benefit B'nai B'rith sports programs.
"People like our event because it's
a comfortable, fun tournament:' said
Pisgah/Zeiger President Rick Sherline.
The event attracts about 60 players. One
way to keep the tournament fresh, he
said, is to offer more than poker.
Detroit News sportswriter Lynn
Henning was brought in as a guest
speaker last summer. This month's tour-
nament features a prize raffle for every-
one who is knocked out of the competi-
tion before the final table.
"We have gift certificates for restau-
rants, car wash coupons, Detroit Tigers
tickets:' Sherline said. "Everyone will go
home a winner."
Entry fees remain the same, and they
include dinner.
Fee for a B'nai B'rith member is $50
and a non-member is $60 by Thursday,
Jan. 24. After that date and at the door,
fees are $60 and $70. For dinner and a
place in the tournament gallery, the fee
is $25.
First prize is a minimum $500.
Competitors must be at least age 18.
Defending champion Jared
Rothberger, who won June 3 in the Teen
Center, earned free admission to this
month's tournament as part of his prize.
Registration and dinner are at 5:30
p.m., with tournament play beginning at
6:30 p.m.
For reservations and information,
contact Sherline at (248) 613-5400 or
the B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region
office at (248) 646-3100.
