Going To The Dogs

Michigan Winter Classic takes place
Jan. 17-20 in Novi.

Harry Kirsbaum
Contributing Writer

T

hey are man's (and woman's)
best friend. Filled with love
and adoration for their own-
ers, a companion for their always too-
short lives, and heralded in film and
television. Think Rin Tin Tin, Benji
and Lassie.
Chances are you won't see Lassie or
Timmy at the Michigan Winter Dog
Classic at the Suburban Collection in
Novi on Jan. 17-20, but you will see
more than 160 breeds and 7,000 dogs,
some of whom are prepping for the
Westminster Kennel Club Show later
in the year.
"We're growing by leaps and
bounds:' said Alan Dorfman, vice pres-
ident of the Oakland County Kennel
Club, and owner of six boxers and
a standard poodle. "Our show is
truly a family event with interest
for children as well as adults:'
During the four-day show, breed,
agility, obedience and group judging
will take place every day. Best in Show,
Meet the Breeds and Duck Herding
will also be offered.
"Show dogs know they're show
dogs:' said Dorfman, who's working on
a third-generation Best in Show boxer,
whose official name is Boca's Royal
Palms Splish Splash, but everyone calls
her Splash. "She won Best in Show at
the Pontiac Kennel Club in 2011 and
the Upper Potomac Valley Kennel Club
during October 2012, and has been
ranked in the top 20 throughout the
country:' he said.

The dog show uses more hair care
products than your average beauty
pageant, he said, but the regular family
dog will have a place at the show and
will be admitted for free through the
back door.
They can spend time with a trainer
at the "My Dog Can Do That" event.
"Trainers will show you how to train
your dog to go over a jump, through
a tunnel or other agility tryouts:' said
Dorfman of West Bloomfield.
The Michigan Winter Dog Classic
has been in existence since 1934, and
for the past four years has teamed up
with the Livonia Kennel Club, making
it the largest AKC show in Michigan.
