Irene was born in 1925 in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Arthur and Hannah Oppenheimer; the family moved to Chicago when Irene was very young. She grew up there and attended the Art Institute of Chicago, where she received a B.F.A. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Richard, while he was stationed there dur- ing his tour in the Navy. After the war, they moved to Detroit, where they raised their family. Always plying her artistic talents, Irene returned to college at Wayne State and received her teaching degree. Mentoring young serious artists was always a joy. Later in life, she discovered weaving and fiber arts and rediscovered watercolors. Richard and Irene retired to Asheville, N.C., where they lived for almost 25 years.
