Purple Rose Theatre Company in Chelsea presents The Meaning of Almost Everything, the 15th play written by PRTC founder and actor Jeff Daniels, Jan. 10-March 9. With elements of slapstick, vaudeville, tragedy and farce, the show questions the nature — and absurdity — of our world. $27-$42. Show times and tick- ets: (734) 433-7673; performancenetwork.org . The Hilberry Theatre will mount the Michigan premiere of the new play Detroit, a Pulitzer Prize finalist by playwright Lisa D'Amour, in reper- tory from Jan. 11-April 5. D'Amour chose the title Detroit — even though the script describes the play to be set in a "first-ring suburb" outside of any mid-sized American city — because of "something about the way the name of that city vibrates in the American imagination [and] evokes this kind of iconic anxiety around the crumbling American dream:' she has said. Previously produced in London, New York (Off-Broadway, where David Schwimmer co-starred) and Chicago, the play's Hilberry produc- tion, directed by Lavinia Hart, will instead be set in the first ring of residential homes on the outskirts of downtown Detroit as two Detroit residents, Mary and Ben, welcome the arrival of their new neighbors, Sharon and Kenny, who have just moved into the vacant house next door. The play — described as "an ecstatic, dan- gerous new comedy" — details the relationship that forms between the two couples and threatens to unravel their lives. D'Amour will participate in post-show talkbacks on Jan. 31 and Feb.l. Tickets: $12-$30. Show times and tickets: (313) 577-2972; hilberry. corn. The exhibition includes the works of select photographers — including Swiss- born, Jewish American photographer Robert Frank — who, for more than 70 years, have found their inspira- tion from the people, city streets and automobile culture of Detroit. Frank's images were particularly inspired by the city's factories, drive-ins and diners from 1955, and are part of a Guggenheim-funded grant for a two- year journey across the U.S. to photo- graph all strata of society. From 28,000 shots, he included 83 in his most famous work, 1958's The Americans. Free with admission; admission to the museum is free for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb County residents.
