JN

ins could be a rare com-

modity this season for the
Frankel Jewish Academy
girls basketball team, but Coach Aron
Wolgel is confident the year will be a
success on other levels.
That's because Wolgel and his play-
ers are focusing as much on life les-
sons as they are on basketball basics.
The court has become an extension of
the classroom.
"You can talk in the classroom about
teamwork — helping others, working
together — but you can really see it
when you play basketball:' said Wolgel,
a Jewish studies teacher at the West
Bloomfield-based FJA.
Wolgel said the girls on the team
have bonded through team events and
later this season will have a Shabbat
dinner at his home.
"That's the best way for them to get
to know each other as people, not just
basketball players:' Wolgel said.
Not everyone on the team has previ-
ous basketball experience, so Wolgel
must be mindful of that fact when he
organizes practices.
"My goal is to give everyone what
she needs to improve as a basketball
player each day, no matter what we're
working on:' the third-year coach said.
"There are many different aspects to,
say, dribbling or shooting:'
Wolgel admits that finding playing
time for everyone is a balancing act.
The best way to learn is on the court in
a game, but the coach must take other
factors into consideration.
"I always need to be mindful of
providing everyone with valuable play-
ing minutes while giving us the best
chance to win:' he said. "That means
someone could get 30 minutes, five or
six minutes or 30 seconds of playing
time or not play at all:'
There's only one girls basketball
team at FJA, so the most inexperienced
player is playing at the varsity level.
Wolgel doesn't think that's necessarily
a bad thing.
"The girls can see firsthand the pace
at which a varsity game is played:'
he said. "If they're on a freshman or
junior varsity team, they don't get that
experience:'
Wolgel sees his main focus as help-
ing each girl achieve her potential as a

basketball player.
"Everyone has a different learning
curve he said. "I need to be support-
ive so they can get to that next level:'
Seniors Stephanie Curhan and Molly
Williams are team captains, selected
by their teammates.
"They're returning players, and the
other girls look up to them because
they've been on the team for four
years:' Wolgel said. "They're an exam-
ple of what they can be:'
The other two returning players are
junior Carly Bornstein and sophomore
Ellie Ginis. Also on the roster are senior
Sydney Bressler; sophomore Shayni
Shecter; and freshmen Sammi Darmon,
Chloe Kowalsky, Izzy Nakisher and
Atara Zwas. Chloe Schwartz and Rachel
Wasserman are student managers.
After losing their first six games
before winter break, the Jaguars return
to action Thursday, Jan. 3, at Clarkston
Everest Academy.
Saturday, Jan. 12, will be a big night.
The FJA girls and boys varsity basket-
ball teams will face Akiva Hebrew Day
School of Southfield at home. The girls
game will be at 7:30 p.m. and the boys
game at 8:45.

Give Them A Try!

Tryouts have been scheduled for the
new Detroit boys under age 16 flag
football and lacrosse teams that will
play this summer in the JCC Maccabi
Games & ArtsFest.
Flag football tryouts will be held 7-9
p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the gym at
the Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield. Lacrosse tryouts will be
7:30-9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, and 7-9
p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, also in the gym
at the JCC.
For more information, contact flag
football coach Josh Ellis at ellisjo9l@

the lacrosse team will play in Orange
County, Calif. The Austin Games are
July 28-Aug. 2, and the Orange County
Games & ArtsFest are Aug. 4-9.
