I Do! I Do! At The JET
It would be most regrettable if even one
person were deterred from attending the
Jewish Ensemble Theatre performance
of I Do! I Do! because of the harsh
review in the Dec. 13 Detroit Free Press.
My wife and I attended the play, and we
both thoroughly enjoyed its acting, sing-
ing and direction.
The JET is a valuable entertainment
resource in our community and offers
creative, challenging and diversified
legitimate theater productions at afford-
able prices. JET programs are staffed
with professional actors and producers.

Kol hakavod [all the honor] to the
Detroit Jewish News for showcasing the
many wonderful initiatives happening
on campuses throughout the state in
support of Israel and to all the students
involved.
I would also like to share a resound-
ing yasher koach [go with strength] to
Jake Silbert of Michigan State University
for volunteering with Magen David
Adorn in Israel and his outstanding
jewish@edu article about his experi-
ences (Dec. 6, page 50).
Jake's stories illustrate how important
Magen David Adom is in Israeli society
— from being a resource of information,
to handling everyday emergencies and,
of course, to responding quickly to the
trauma and violence during the recent
eight days of war.
Magen David Adom is not govern-
ment funded, so volunteers like Jake
Silbert help ensure they can fulfill their
mission of saving lives.

Kudos To StandWithUs
For 'Festival Of Lights'
I congratulate StandWithUs-Michigan
President Barbara Moretsky and Vice
President Margot Gardner for their team
leadership in planning and implement-
ing the StandWithUs-MI Festival of
Lights event at Adat Shalom Synagogue,
Saturday evening, Dec. 15.
Two hundred people attended to
honor Elaine and Michael Serling for
their many contributions to Jewish
culture and Israel studies, including
the establishment of the Israel studies
chair on the Michigan State University
campus.
The program featured keynote speak-
er Dr. Jonathan Adelman discussing the
threats of radical Islam and Iran toward
the civilized world.
Brett Cohen, the StandWithUs national
campus program director, filled us in
on the challenges Israel and Jewish stu-
dents are facing on campuses across the
country and the successful programs and
actions StandWithUs and the students
are conducting to counteract the anti-
Semitism and anti-Zionism on campus.

Suggestion: Respond To
Terror By Confiscating Land
For anyone observing the relationship
between Israel and the Palestinians, it is
strange that, after all of this time, Israel
still does not understand the motiva-
tion of their opponents. Please recall
the time when there were many suicide
killers, killing at will, and knowing that
their families would be praised for rais-
ing someone who was willing to die for
the "cause
At that time, I sent a letter to Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon in which I sug-
gested that an understanding of the true
motivation of the Palestinians was not
being taken into account in stopping
those suicide bombers. What was their
real objective? To gain more land.
educate readers on how they can save
young lives through the program.
"Working with Beaumont pediatric
cardiologist Dr. Nancy Cutler, the JN
was able to shed significant light on
this critically important student screen-
ing program," said Sklar. "Our hope was
to encourage more teen athletes to have
their hearts checked before competing.
All student athletes and their par-
ents would have to do for a healthy
heart check is to contact Beaumont at
(800) 328-8542;' said Sklar.
The cost for the screening is $25.
Because the family of the suicide kill-
er was praised, I suggested that losing
something might prove to be a deter-
rent. The logical would be simple: When
the family is lauded for the sacrifice of
their son, why not consider evicting
them from their home and then destroy-
ing that home?
I received a note from Mr. Sharon's
secretary that indicated that the idea was
being discussed. But it must have been
utilized because the number of bombings
began to be reduced, eventually ceasing.
When the current "relationship"
between the two sides was announced,
the rocket firings did not stop. Using
the same analogy, I contacted the Israeli
embassy and suggested that each rocket
fired into Israel should result in the loss
of a portion of Gaza. Imagine the effect
when the Palestinians would see their
territory start to become smaller.
This would be even more empowering
to the Israeli cause if the Palestinians
were informed that any land lost
because of rocket attacks would be lost
without any possibility of future negotia-
tion. Would it not be better if the leaders
of the Palestinians in Gaza, seeing the
loss of territory, would crack down on
those who were firing the rockets?
This would eliminate the need for
Israeli military responses because it would
show that the Palestinian leadership had
realized that rockets were going to cause
that part of any future Palestinian state to
become smaller and smaller.
One of the areas of diplomacy that
Israel has rarely utilized is the power of
world opinion. By informing the world
what would happen if rockets were fired
and the confiscation of land were to be
the result, those who oppose any Israeli
attempt at non-violent counter-respons-
es would have no argument since the
Palestinians would be the ones who
were being required to control their own
population's activities.
