Volunteers of all ages will partici- pate in dozens of social service proj- ects so that their Christian neighbors can celebrate Christmas with their families. Mitzvah Day is presented by the Jewish Community Relations Council and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. "Step forward and celebrate the strength of our com- munity" is the theme. Nearly 1,000 Jewish volunteers will be joined for the fourth year by their Muslim neighbors to take part in "mitzvahs" (good deeds), aiding Detroit area social service agencies at 40 different community sites. Volunteer teams will fan out to sites throughout Metro Detroit. Project times vary, running between 6:45 a.m. and 4 p.m. Many grandparents, par- ents and children volunteer together as families. Activities include visits to older adults in nursing care facilities, preparing and serving holiday meals, and delivering toys and gifts to fami- lies in need. Middle Schoolers Invited To BBYO Regional Convention For the first time, the BBYO Regional Convention (RC) will be open to middle school teens Wednesday- Saturday, Dec. 26 - 29. It's a highlight of the year for BBYO's high schoolers — and now middle school teens can join in the fun. BBYO Connect (the middle school program) will feature separate activities for sixth, seventh and eighth grade Jewish teens. Middle schoolers will enjoy events such as whirlyball and dinner (on Wednesday), video and board games and dodgeball (on Thursday), after- noon bowling and Shabbat dinner (on Friday), and VIP seating at the RC Talent Show on Saturday evening. "I love RC because it's four days where you get to be with your friends and see the amazing sense of broth- erhood and sisterhood BBYO has to offer:' said Bri Dines, BBG Regional N'siah (girls' president). "BBYO has doubled down on our commitment to engaging middle schoolers," said Eric Adelman, direc- tor of BBYO-Michigan Region. "Too many see bar and bat mitzvah as the end of their Jewish journey, rather than its beginning. We believe that when they see over 400 teens who proudly wear their Jewish identity on their sleeve, it will inspire them to engage Jewishly during middle and high school." Any Jewish sixth- to eighth-grader can attend the RC's middle school events. RSVP to Danny Bittker, BBYO program associate, at dbittker@bbyo. org or (248) 432-5686.
