OTPOURRI
The pungent smells of San
Francisco are almost everywhere in
the Golden Gate metropolis.
From Fisherman's Wharf, where the early
fish catches are brought ... Or the aroma of
fresh crab being displayed on the sidewalk
and sold ... Or the wonderful wafting of
Dungeness crab and other seafood that
make up the delicious cioppino at Tadich
Grill ... Or the drifting odors of Italian din-
ing in Little Italy ... and around the corner
to Chinatown for Cantonese, Shanghai, etc.,
food.
And not to forget San Francisco's famous
Stinking Rose restaurant where garlic is
the major ingredient in its California-
Italian dishes ... The Stinking Rose goes
through more than 3,000 pounds of garlic
a month in accordance with its motto, "We
Season Our Garlic With Food:'
Among some residents, one of the neigh-
borhood dining spots, Bungalow 44 in near-
by Mill Valley, is known as a one-stop-only
restaurant because of its seemingly over-
priced, mediocre food and no brewed coffee
Masala Dosa, in the Inner Sunset area of
San Francisco, regularly receives favorable
reviews for its north and south Indian food
... Miller's East Coast Deli, owned by Robby
Morgenstein from Baltimore, who has had a
New York deli in San Francisco 14 years and
one in San Rafael one year, draws comments
for its undersized bagels and big favorite
Horseradish Dill Pickle Burger with Swiss
cheese, etc., but boos for the use of "kosher
style" on menu items ... San Francisco's B
Star restaurant with Asian fusion flavors,
American sprinklings and even Mexican, is a
Wall Street Journal favorite.
And what would a West Coast visit be
without a luscious In And Out Burger?
Thanks to the flight attendants I had

to San Francisco on Delta
Airlines flight #1145, for help-
ing to make it a most enjoy-
able one ... Kudos galore to
these gals who gave much
pleasure in their sometimes-
difficult job of making so
many happy and comfortable.

READERS ASKING the whereabouts
of Chef Matthew Schellig, who did
such a masterful job while at Zazios in
Birmingham, he is now culinary instruc-
tor at the Dorsey Schools in Roseville and
Pontiac ... Also catering manager of its
new full-service Dorsey Catering Co. ...
The venture with skilled culinary students
and chefs was formed this year and is
receiving much attention.
"We have an amazing collection of highly
skilled chefs that truly enjoy creative and
individual menu designs for our client needs
and also give our students the opportunity of
real world experience says Matt ... Sounds
like a fine opportunity for people to get high-
end catering at budget pricing while giving
students opportunities in servicing guests
before graduating ... Chef Matthew can be
reached at (586) 296-6745, ext. 1125.
IN HIS EMAIL LETTER to members of
Knollwood Country Club, new president of
KCC's 88th year, Larry Slabotsky, taking over
from immediate past president Bob Koplow,
bares his feelings in saying that it is more
than a golf club ... "It is my second home,

a place where I can relax with
my extended family, entering a
place where I can leave my world
behind, enjoy my friends, have a
drink and not only let off steam,
but also take a steam"
Interesting are Larry's kitchen
plans with a special committee of
Liz Schubiner and Mark Colton
appointed to look into things there
... Also Knollwood's commit-
ment to expanding the number of
kosher meals it serves ... "Several
families cannot eat at the club
because of the lack of kosher meals, but they
will soon have more options:' writes Larry

OLDIE BUT GOODIE Dept ... The U.S.
Navy cruiser was anchored in Mississippi for
shore leave, and the ship's captain received a
note from the elderly wife of a wealthy plan-
tation owner, people, who in their minds,
were still fighting the Civil War.
"Dear Captain. Thursday will be my great-
granddaughter's debutante ball, and I would
like you to send four well-mannered, hand-
some, unmarried officers in their formal
dress uniforms to attend the dance. They
should arrive promptly at 8 p.m. prepared for
an evening of polite Southern conversation.
They should be excellent dancers, as they will
be the escorts of lovely refined young ladies.
"One last point. No Jews, please:'
Sending a written message back, the
captain replied, "Madam, thank you for
your invitation. I am sending four of my

best and most prized officers.
"One is a lieutenant commander, and a
graduate from MIT in fluid technologies
and ship design.
"The second is a lieutenant, one of
our helicopter pilots, and a graduate of
Northwestern University in Chicago, with
a B.S. in aeronautical engineering. His
master's degree and Ph.D. in aeronautical
and mechanic engineering are from Texas
Tech University and he is also an astronaut
candidate.
"The third officer is also a lieutenant,
with degrees in both computer system and
information technology from SMU and he
is awaiting notification on his doctoral dis-
sertation from Cal Tech.
"Finally, the fourth officer, also a lieuten-
ant commander, is our ship's doctor, with an
undergraduate degree from the University
of Georgia and his medical degree is from
the University of North Carolina. He is also a
senior fellow in trauma surgery at Bethesda"
Upon receiving the letter, she was excit-
ed and looked forward with pleasure to
her great-granddaughter being escorted by
four handsome naval officers without peer
and the other women in her social circle
being insanely jealous.
At precisely 8 p.m., the matriarch heard a
polite rap at the door, which she opened to
find, in full dress uniform, four handsome,
smiling black officers. Her mouth fell open,
but pulling herself together, she stammered,
"There must be some mistake".
"No, madam:' said the first officer.
"Captain Goldberg never makes mistakes"
CONGRATS ... To Dr. Abe Pearlman on
