The company of The Grinch

August, who found his special com-
munity among theater people, earned
his bachelor's degree from the University
of Colorado, became part of the first
class of directing interns at the Juilliard
School and attained his master's degree
at the California Institute of the Arts.
"I started working immediately:' says
August, who decided that directing
synthesized his experiences with acting
and music as well as childhood inter-
ests including drawing, painting and
Dungeons & Dragons.
He currently is working on a new
musical, The Fourth Messenger. It is a
modern retelling of the Buddha story.
Although August will not be in Detroit
for The Grinch, he looks back on area
visits with his late maternal grandfather,
John Lawrence Oncley, a biophysicist at
the University of Michigan.
August's wife, Amy, is an actress and
the daughter of actor Robert Redford,
who was coached in acting by Grinch co-
composer Hague, also an actor.
Born Albert Marcuse to a Jewish psy-
chiatrist and chess champion in Berlin
who considered their Judaism a liability,
Hague was raised Lutheran and about
to enter into the Hitler Youth when he
and his mother (his father died when

coming at a steady pace.
The set, by Kate Southern, con-
sists solely of the couples' bedroom,
dominated by a large four-poster
bed in the center of the room. Agnes'
side of the room is appointed with
feminine furnishings, such as a pink
brocade chaise, while dark wood
furniture gives Michael's side a mas-
culine feel.
Christa Koerner's costumes
are fabulous and plentiful; Agnes'
elaborate satin and lace-trimmed
nightgowns are more akin to ball
gowns, and her evening clothes are
even more glamorous, down to the
beaded elbow-length gloves. Except
for the striped flannel nightshirt and
matching cap that Michael dons on
his wedding night, his wardrobe is
classy and stylish, especially his satin

Germany. He later reclaimed his Jewish
identity in America. Hague played the
music teacher in the Fame movie and
TV series.
August and his wife fill family time
raising three preschoolers.
"I try to remain as active in the Jewish
community as possible says August,
whose religious practices, including a
bar mitzvah, were shaped by his father's
heritage.
"There's a small community in Los
Angeles that I've been taken into. They
have a modern, community approach
to Judaism, and I really like that. It's not
formal through a synagogue:'

and elegant cutaway tuxedo.
Diane Ulseth also deserves applause for
the wonderful period props, which include
a retro red tricycle, a large wooden hobby
horse and a vintage pram with oversized
metal wheels.
Piano accompaniment is provided by
Matt Fillion and Cynthia Pavelek, who
also makes a brief onstage appearance as a
nurse. Lighting design is by Jon Weaver.
There are a few anachronisms, such as
the references to divorce, lawyers and ali-
mony in the early 1900s in the song "The
Honeymoon Is Over," but overall, I Do, I
Do! provides a charming behind-the-scenes
look at a marriage that manages to sur-
vive both human and cultural foibles with
humor and heart.

I Do! I Do! runs through Dec. 31,

with a special New Year's Eve
package that includes food, dancing
and a champagne toast. (248) 788-
