It will be the fifth time the Motor City has hosted the Olympic- style athletic competition for Jewish teens ages 13-16 that began in 1982. The Maccabi Games is the largest organized sports program for Jewish teens in the world. More than 6,000 youths participate each year. Detroit previously hosted the Maccabi Games in 1984, 1990, 1998 and 2008. It was the only site in 1984 and 1990, one of two sites in 1998 and one of three sites in 2008. There will be a first for Detroit in 2014. It will host the Maccabi Games ArtsFest, which debuted in 2007. Six years between hosting gigs is long enough but not too long, said Dave Stone, associate executive direc- tor of the JCC of Metropolitan Detroit. "We didn't want to wait eight or 10 years again to be a host because you lose your learning curve and you want to get the same players involved:' he said. Ariella Monson agrees. She's the Detroit Maccabi Games and ArtsFest director. "We want to keep the buzz going from the 2008 Maccabi Games we hosted:' she said. Dates for the Detroit Maccabi Games and ArtsFest are Aug. 17-22, 2014. Interestingly, those are the same days in August as the 2008 Maccabi Games in Detroit. Cherry Hill, N.J. is the other host site in 2014. The Maccabi Games will be held there ear- lier in August. Stone is thrilled Detroit is a Maccabi Games host once again, even though he's well aware of the work involved. "Being a host is a wonderful community-builder, and it highlights what a wonderful Jewish community we have he said. "We began having conversations about this in 2010. We eventually decided on 2014 because we needed the time to make our Maccabi Games great again:' Even though the 2014 Maccabi Games are nearly two years away, Stone and Monson are guessing there will be 3,000 athletes and ArtFest participants here, including 500 from Detroit. "Those are ballpark figures, but that's what we're expecting;' Monson said. There were 18 sports venues across Metropolitan Detroit for the 2008 Maccabi Games including places like the JCC in West Bloomfield, Birmingham Groves, Birmingham Seaholm, Bloomfield Hills Andover, North Farmington, Walled Lake Central, Walled Lake Western and West Bloomfield high schools, Country Lanes, Drake Park, and Franklin Hills, Knollwood and Tam-O-Shanter coun- try clubs. About the same number of sports venues will be needed in 2014. Among the sports offered for 2013 are baseball, basketball, bowling, dance, flag football, golf, inline hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. It isn't known yet which sports will be held in 2014 in Detroit. ArtsFest gives Jewish teens with creative abilities a chance to put their talents on display and participate in Maccabi Games activities like the opening ceremonies, JCC Cares mitz- vah projects and Hang Time, where teens can play video games and take part in educational games about Israel and Jewish sports history. Among the ArtsFest specialties offered are acting/improv, dance, culi- nary arts, musical theater, rock and jazz band, sports broadcast journal- ism, visual arts and vocal music. Hundreds of volunteers and host families will be needed for the 2014 Maccabi Games and ArtsFest in Detroit, and it's never too early to sign up. Interested? Contact Monson at (248) 432-5530 or amonson@jccdet.org . Maccabi Games hosts for 2013 are Austin, Texas, and Orange County, Calif. Austin previously hosted in 2004, and Orange County last was a host in 2007. Austin's dates for next year are July 28 through Aug. 2. Orange County's dates are Aug. 5-9. ArtsFest will be held in Orange County. An organizational meeting for prospective Detroit Maccabi athletes, artists and their families will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, in Handleman Hall at the JCC in West Bloomfield. ❑ Send news to sports@thejewishnews.com .
