Prospective Detroit Maccabi ath- letes and artists ages 13-16 and their families are invited to an organi- zational meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, in Handleman Hall at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. Coaches and officials will be there supplying information and answering questions about tryouts, auditions and the two host locations. Austin, Texas, will be a host site from July 28-Aug. 2, and Orange County, Calif., will be a host site from Aug. 5-9. ArtsFest will be held in Orange County. The Detroit Maccabi organizational meeting was traditionally held in mid- January. There are logistical reasons for the switch. "Our tryouts are about a month ear- lier [in early January] than they used to be, and we wanted the kids to have more time to prepare for them than they used to have — they won't need to rush:' said Franci Silver, who has taken over as Detroit Maccabi commit- tee chair from Harold Friedman. Most Detroit Maccabi tryouts are held at the JCC. By holding them in early January, Silver said, they won't conflict as much with JCC youth activities including the popular Kenny Goldman basketball league. Boys flag football and boys and girls lacrosse have been added to the list of Maccabi sports, and Silver is confident Detroit will be well represented in all three. Other Maccabi sports are baseball, basketball, bowling, dance, golf, inline hockey, soccer, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Also new this year for Detroit Maccabi is a fundraising program through MyLocker. Detroit Maccabi spiritware can be designed and bought online at www.mylocker.net with 12 percent of the purchase price helping Detroit athletes and artists pay for their Maccabi experience. To get the fundraising ball rolling, a $10 discount has been offered to the first 300 people placing an order. Enter the promotional code "F12ML." The offer is good through Friday, Dec. 14. Silver, an attorney, has been involved with the Maccabi Games since 2008. She served as co-soccer commissioner that year when Detroit was a host site. The West Bloomfield resident was the Detroit Maccabi girls soccer coach from 2009-2012 and the Detroit Maccabi sports chair for 2012. The sports chair is mainly responsible for signing up coaches and being their liaison to the committee. Friedman left his committee chair job with Detroit Maccabi because he's the Team USA sports co-chairman for the World Maccabiah Games that will be held next year in Israel. Funds are needed to help Team USA athletes go to Israel. Send a check made out to "Maccabi USA" to Friedman at 24 H Southport Lane, Boynton Beach, FL 33436. "Now more than ever, it's important for the worldwide Jewish community to come together as one and demon- strate its solidarity with Israel and Jews everywhere Friedman said.
