first-time fundraising event
for a new chapter of an
innovative organization
will feature Chasidic singer and com-
poser Lipa Schmeltzer.
The concert benefits program-
ming for the newly
formed Yachad
Detroit, the local
branch of Yachad,
the National
Jewish Council
for Disabilities,
an international
Lipa
Jewish youth group
Schmeltzer
for individuals
with special needs.
The Chanukah with Lipa concert
will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec.
12, at the Berman Center for the
Performing Arts in West Bloomfield.
"Yachad is so special because it
represents friendship on the truest
level:' said Jeff Lazar, the organiza-
tion's local director. "We work with a
wide range of individuals with abili-
ties that vary from low to high func-
tioning. Our goal is to bring more
Jewish inclusion to Detroit:'
The Oak Park-based Yachad
Detroit works to enhance the life
opportunities of individuals with dis-
abilities, ensuring their participation
in the full spectrum of Jewish life.
The organization offers numerous
inclusive activities per month for
those age 8 through adulthood.
"Our projects and learning pro-
grams take us directly into the
Jewish community, helping individu-
als build comfortable relationships
with friends and their community:'
Lazar said.
"Supporting the concert is a great
way to help us build and maintain
our learning programs and social
programs, but, as importantly, allow
us to grow our young adult leader-
ship division and relationship-build-
ing course programming as well:' he
said.
