on rails laid on a cobblestone street
reminiscent of the Warsaw Ghetto, the
largest of the Jewish ghettoes in Nazi-
occupied Europe, where Henrietta
Weisberg and her family lived for a
while.
The 10-ton boxcar stands in
the shadows of a replica of the
Hannoverscher Bahnhof (Hannoverian
railway station). That Hamburg sta-
tion, with a soaring curved roof and
solid brick facade, was a passenger
terminal for more than 60 years before
becoming a freight and deportation
site. The normal became the atrocious
under Nazi rule. Between 1940 and
1945, at least 6,000 Jews and Gypsies
were transported to the camps via the
station, 100 or more at a time. Maybe
1,000 people survived.

Collective Strength
This type of boxcar was last used in
the 1970s with little refrain over its
ignominious past and just a faded
reflection of its precious cargo.
Now, thanks to Henrietta and Alvin
Weisberg responding to Stephen
Goldman's call for funding support,
the boxcar will pulsate with images
of the unimaginable barbarity of the
Third Reich. Onlookers will see up
close why knowledge, outrage and
keeping the Holocaust's lessons up

front are critical components to keep-
ing genocidal hatemongers from find-
ing traction to act.
Appropriately, the boxcar exhibit
sets visitors to the HMC on a journey
through the mists of European Jewish
life, the rise and fall of Nazism, and
the stirring role of the righteous.
An HMC docent, Lori Weisberg of
West Bloomfield embraces the sacred
task of recounting the Holocaust on
behalf of the victims and survivors —
heroes all — so the horrors will not be
forgotten.
The daughter-in-law of Henrietta
and Alvin, Lori put it beautifully: "We
emphasize the importance of respect-
ing differences between people, treat-
ing one another with tolerance and not
being silent bystanders in the face of
injustice:'
The HMC, founded in 1984, is one
of the most dynamic, riveting and
significant Holocaust memorials any-
where.
For the 85,000 annual visitors to its
Zekelman Family Campus, including
all those busloads of impressionable
school kids, the Henrietta and Alvin
Weisberg Gallery, replete with a vin-
tage German boxcar, will serve as a
repository for exhibits that educate,
elevate, provoke and challenge — and
ultimately, elicit a message of hope.
