Doctors For Israel
JNF medical group raises funds for Negev medical center.
j
ewish National Fund (JNF) hosted its
Doctors for Israel dinner Nov. 7 at the
Baronette Renaissance Hotel in West
Bloomfield. The dinner honored Dr. Mel Lester
for his dedication to the Jewish community and
Israel.
The evening featured Dr. Ora Pescovitz,
University of Michigan executive vice president
of medical affairs, who spoke about her longtime
connection to JNF and the important work U-M is
doing with various agencies in Israel.
JNF Doctors for Israel (DFI) is an elite group of
physicians, dentists and professionals in diverse
healthcare specialties united by their shared val-
ues and love for Israel. Members receive special
JNF benefits and are an integral part of JNF's con-
tinuing efforts to build a homeland for the Jewish
people for generations to come.
Proceeds from the dinner benefited the con-
struction of the Central Arava Medical Center.
The Central Arava, a remote desert region in
southern Israel, is served by a small, 40-year-
old medical clinic in deplorable condition that
is staffed by a nurse and visited by two general
practitioners several times a week. Residents must
travel nearly two hours to Beer Sheva or Eilat for
emergency care, which is very taxing on residents
and poses a great danger. In partnership with the
Central Arava Regional Council and the Israeli
government, JNF is building a world-class medical
center to replace the dilapidated clinic.

The breakfast, which

featured U.S. Olympic Gold
Medalist sprinter Darnell Hall, who is a PAL alumnus and Detroit police officer, was
hosted by PAL board members Jonathan Frank and Arthur Horwitz, as well as Steve
Fishman and Brett Koretzky.
PAI:s sports-related programming serves about 10,000 children, who would other-
wise have idle time on their hands, each year. The 1,000 PAL volunteers serve as role
models for the children they serve.
The breakfast was aimed at creating more awareness in the Jewish community of the
good work being done by PAL, Horwitz said. "Darnell Hall is the ultimate success story:'
he added. "He overcame a hardscrabble upbringing to achieve the pinnacle of success in
sports, and he continues to serve PAL as a volunteer, as do many alumni."
