The event begins at 6:15 p.m. and includes dinner, program, music and dancing. Reservations start at $75 per person; RSVP by Dec. 12. The evening highlights the work of StandWithUs, an international Israel education and advocacy organization now in its 11th year, which began in Los Angeles as a response to the growing anti-Israel actions on many California campuses. Chapters were then formed across the country by people dealing with the same issues at their local universities. Written materials were developed that enabled students and others to respond with fact-based information to the anti- Israel propaganda. Now the website, standwithus.com, makes available all this material plus much more. Elaine and Michael Serling will be honored that evening for their work on behalf of Jewish culture and Israel studies. A singer/songwriter, Elaine is well known for her wonderful concerts at the JCC's Gottlieb Musicfest and at other venues. For more than 40 years, Elaine's career in the field of Jewish music education has included teach- ing about Jewish music and directing choirs of several local Sunday schools and Hebrew schools. Michael works on behalf of Israel studies at his alma mater, Michigan State University. Since 1998, he has been chair of the MSU Jewish Studies Advisory Board, which is dedicated to growing the successful Jewish Studies Program at MSU. The Serlings gave Dr. Jonathan Adelman the major gift to endow the Serling and Friends Israel Studies Chair and have endowed a visiting Israeli Scholars position. Michael also serves on the boards of MSU Hillel, Detroit Jewish Federation Capital Needs, the Michigan Council of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, American Technion Institute and the Anti-Defamation League. The Festival of Lights celebration features as its keynote speaker Dr. Jonathan Adelman. A professor at the prestigious Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver, Adelman was the doctoral dissertation adviser to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. At Columbia University, he gave the Jacob and Anna Blauner Lecture in 2004, following in the footsteps of Elie Weisel, Isaac Bashevis Singer and William Safire. He has been a panelist and speaker at numerous AIPAC events and has worked extensively with several gov- ernment agencies in Washington. For more than a decade, Adelman has gone on more than 15 interna- tional speaking tours for the U.S. State Department to more than a dozen countries. In recent years, he has been a popular speaker on the Middle East, and especially Israel, which is the subject of his latest book. Besides the numerous books he has written or edited, he has written many academic articles including a chapter in Tenured or Tenuous: Defining the Role of Faculty in Supporting Israel on Campus.
