Jaguars On Ice!

t's officially a Farmington Hills
Hockey Association Midget BB
house team, but make no mis-
take about it — it's Frankel Jewish
Academy's first ice hockey team.
Thanks to the tireless efforts
of academy board president Bill
Newman, Coach Mark Weiss and team
captain Jonah Folbe that began several
months ago, the team sprang to life
this season.
Nine of the 17 players attend the
West Bloomfield-based high school.
The team is unofficially called the FJA
Jaguars.
"I was very excited about working to
get a team started, and I found some-
one even more enthused than I was in
Mark Weiss:' Newman said. "He's done
a great job. He's the right guy at the
right time. The players are real pio-
neers. Because of them, the team will
stay above the radar from now on:'
This is a club team, not an inter-
scholastic team. And it probably will
remain a club team for the foreseeable
future. "It's the way to go:' Weiss said.
"You don't want to get into a situation
where you have enough players for a
strictly Frankel team one season and
not enough the next season. That's not
fair to the Catholic League [of which
the academy is a member]:'
Speaking of the Catholic League, four
of the team's players are from Catholic
League high schools. Another is from
a Lutheran high school. Even though
it has an eclectic religious makeup, the
team does not play on Shabbat.
"We have players from all over, and
they never played together before this
season, but they're passionate about
hockey and having a great time," Weiss
said. "The Frankel players are proud
to wear their team warm-ups at school
on game days:'
For Folbe, a longtime travel hockey
player, getting the opportunity to play
hockey for the academy is the culmi-
nation of years of efforts.
"I tried to get on other high school
teams (representing the academy);

there were always complications:'
said the senior defenseman from
Huntington Woods.
"It's so much fun playing on this
team. It's a mix of players from dif-
ferent high schools, but most of the
players from outside the academy were
recruited by the Jewish players:'
He's also a proponent of playing at
the club instead of the interscholastic
level.
"You need a lot of skilled travel
players to compete against other high
school teams:' he said. "You can't have
only a couple travel players, like we do
now:'
Folbe is one of the academy's top
athletes. He also plays soccer, golf and
basketball.
The other academy students on
the team are forwards Emery Weiss
(Mark Weiss' son), Dustin Shaw, Ben
Canvasser and Michael Klar; and defen-
semen Ira Brown, Ethan Weinfeld, Seth
Blazofsky and Ami Zuroff.
Forward Ziv Brodie attends Akiva
Hebrew Day School in Southfield.
Also on the team are defenseman
Matt Downey from U-D Jesuit, for-
ward Bryce Sucher from Orchard Lake
St. Mary's, forward Andrew Jabaro
from Birmingham Brother Rice, for-
ward Chase Beerbower from Westland
Huron Valley Lutheran, forward Evan
Paul from West Bloomfield, goalie
Lee Rice from Novi Catholic Central
and goalie Olivia Saranen from
Farmington.
Matt Downey, Richard Saranen,
Evan Shaw and Bruce Sucher are assis-
tant coaches and Lisa Jaboro is the
team manager.
The Jaguars are based and play
their home games at the Farmington
Hills Ice Arena. They're members of
the Little Caesars Amateur Hockey
League, the nation's largest amateur
youth hockey league. They went 3-6 in
their first nine games.
