stark vulnerability of Israeli citizens.
The NGO of HaMidbar (www.
torhamidbar.org.il/en) has been work-
ing around the clock to reach the poor-
est neighborhoods of Beersheva and
provide for basic needs. It was through
contact with members of this organi-
zation that I and others could reach
those in need.
Secondly, the student union at my
university has set up a team of more
than 70 international students (Jewish
and non-Jewish) who have been tire-
lessly researching, writing and trans-
lating the Israeli news into many lan-
guages over many Internet platforms.
Their efforts have been acknowledged
in person by Yuli Edelstein, the Israeli
Hasbara (public diplomacy) minister,
and commended by President Shimon
Peres.

Israel Is Fooling Itself
By Appeasing Hamas
It is unbelievable that Israel agreed to a
ceasefire with the Hamas terrorists.
For those of us with family in Israel
and who visit Israel, the fact that
Israelis are willing to live with a per-
manent low-level conflict that erupts
into major missile attacks every few
years is troubling.
History teaches us that countries
who appease their enemies instead of
defeating them invite aggression on a
greater and greater scale. Thus what
began as crude short-range missiles
terrorizing only the Sderot population
has morphed into a long-range missile
capability in which no Israeli citizen
is safe.
Much of the blame for this escala-
tion is the Israeli political system,
which does not allow for geographical
representation. Thus no one cared
about the missile threat because only
the city of Sderot was targeted — and
instead of defeating Hamas once and
for all, now all Israeli cities, including
Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, are targets.
Doesn't the Israeli government
understand that Hamas' goal is not to
kill Israelis but to terrorize them and
make life in Israel unbearable such
that more Israelis leave Israel and
more Jews do not visit.
To paraphrase a famous Holocaust-
era statement, "When they targeted
Sderot, I did not demand a harsh
Israeli response because I did not live
in Sderot or Ashkelon or Ashdod, but
when the rockets targeted Tel Aviv and
Jerusalem, where most Israelis live, it
was too late ... because our restraint
had allowed the enemy to develop a
sophisticated military capability."

The longer Israel waits to militarily
defeat Hamas the more casualties the
IDF and the Israeli civilian population
will be forced to endure. In the mean-
time, as Israeli leaders procrastinate
and "kick the can down the road,"
Hamas will continue to re-arm in Gaza
just as Hezbollah has re-armed in
Lebanon.

A Hit At Hillel
I just read the story about Hillel Day
School commissioning a Torah and
how it ties to the school's commitment
to technology and 21st-century educa-
tion (Tablets And Torah, Nov. 15, page
1). As a parent of a Hillel 8th grader, I
wanted to share our experiences thus
far with the new 1:1 technology pro-
gram.
Let me say that the new Lenovo
PC tablets are so much more than an
electronic textbook. This amazing tool
enables the students to receive a pro-
gressive, global education. Learning
is no longer confined to a desk in a
classroom. The reach the kids have
(with the new technology) goes so far
beyond a traditional learning model.
Also, teachers are able to "talk" to
the students on screen and give them
immediate feedback on their work.
We love this for many reasons, but in
particular, it's just another way that the
Hillel teachers build and strengthen
their 1:1 relationships with our daugh-
ter.
Combine the above with the orga-
nizational tools that the tablet affords
the students and it's a huge win. The
digital "binders" make it so easy for
even the most disorganized child. I am
speaking from firsthand experience
when I say, "What a relief to no longer
have to worry about messy handwrit-
ing and lost, mutilated papers:'
As parents committed to the future
of the Jewish community, we believe
that Hillel is and always has been the
right choice for a progressive, academ-
ically sound, values-based education.
Our children are growing up knowing
who they are and how they can affect
the future. A huge thank you to the
amazing teachers who have patiently
nurtured, taught and respected our
children.
We feel fortunate to be able to fulfill
this mitzvah of writing the Torah with
the Hillel community. We are helping
to shape the future by honoring the
traditions of the past.
