U-M Hillel sent a large contingent of students to the recent Federation
General Assembly in Baltimore, including two Berman Fellows.
0
ver the years, the University of
Michigan Hillel has taken great
pride in sending a large and
engaged group of students to the Jewish
Federations of North America General
Assembly (GA). Earlier this month, 27 stu-
dents traveled to the GA in Baltimore, where
they had the opportunity to meet and learn
with more than 3,000 professional and orga-
nizational Jewish leaders.
Each U-M student delegate was paired
with a Jewish community leader who serves
as a mentor to the student at the GA. The
mentor is a professional or volunteer in a
field of specific interest to the student — for
example, experiential Jewish education, orga-
nizational development, fundraising, Israel
engagement and advocacy, rabbinic training
or Jewish environmentalism.
Junior Nathan Chesterman of Huntington
Woods, said, "The GA was very fast paced,
and I felt like I needed to be in three places
at once. I could not think of a better mentor
to have than Amy Skopp Cooper, assistant
national director of the Ramah camping
movement. She was the embodiment of
what I was interested in learning about
at the GA — Jewish informal education
in the context of camps."
Senior Ariella Yedwab of Commerce
Township found the GA to be "very excit-
ing and busy." She participated in many
Israel conversations and had the opportu-
nity to meet with Linda Hurwitz, GA co-
chair, and described their time together
as "amazing!"
Highlights of the GA experience for
the U-M Hillel delegation included meet-
ing with representatives from the Jewish

Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and with
local philanthropist Bill Berman. The students
met Sunday with Scott Kaufman, Miryam
Rosenzweig and Ted Cohen. The students
learned about Federation's CommunityNEXT
effort to reach and attract young Jews to
Detroit and discussed their interests in the
opportunities for Jewish life in Detroit —
whether it be through social justice, urban
farming, arts or tech innovation.
On Monday evening, the U-M students
and staff met with local philanthropist Bill
Berman, a major figure in the Detroit and
American Jewish communities, for an intimate
conversation. Berman shared how being
Jewish has informed his life and how he has
made his decisions; this inspired the students
to share with him how they envision Judaism
being central in their lives beyond college.

University of Michigan Hillel.
