Shabbat
Learning

Adat Shalom kindergarten
students celebrate with
families.

y

oungsters in the Adat Shalom
Religious School kindergarten
class culminated their Shabbat
learning unit recently with a family pro-
gram entitled "Takin & Bakie The chil-
dren and their parents and grandparents
completed an activity booklet, learned the
Shabbat blessings and the blessings of the
children, lit candles and braided challah.
By the end of the session, the families
were ready to make Shabbat in their own
homes.
Braiding the dough made everyone
hungry for a taste, so the morning fin-
ished with a challah treat and delicious
toppings. The families now are looking
forward to Friday nights so they can use
their booklets to help them make Shabbat
at home, says Debi Banooni, director of
Jewish Family Education at Adat Shalom
Synagogue in Farmington Hills.

Helping The Elderly

S

unday, Nov. 11, was a per-
fect autumn day for the
more than 400 people who
participated in the 16th annual
Jewish Family Service Fall Fix Up.
Fanning out across Metro Detroit,
families, youth groups, schools and
local sponsors pitched in to help
rake leaves and winterize windows
for older adults in our community.
"It just feels good to be able to
give back to the community," says
Mark Nakisher, who volunteers
each year with his family. People
are able to interact with the cli-
ents while providing the service.
Everyone walks away with a smile.
Participating groups included
Congregation Shaarey Zedek,
Home Depot, Yeshivas Darchei
Torah, BBYO chapters Fisher AZA
and Kulanu BBG, Hillel of Metro
Detroit, Boy Scout Troop 364,

of Metropolitan Detroit, Aish in the
Woods, Congregation Beth Shalom
and the Jewish Parent Institute.
Event committee members
included Sara Voight, chair, Jack
Cherney, Micki Grossman, Dr.
Steven Dunn and Sharon Havis.
