orothy Jean Lunken Gould, 83,
of West Bloomfield, formerly
of Niagara Falls and Bay Beach,
Ontario, Canada, died Nov. 16, 2012.
She was retired chairman of the English
Department at Niagara
University.
Mrs. Gould was born in
Niagara Falls, graduated
from Ithaca College in New
York, majoring in theater,
and earned a master's degree
in counseling from Niagara
University as well as a master's
degree in speech communica-

Buffalo.
She spent most of her life in Niagara
Falls and New York, where she was born
and raised. She was on the faculty at
Niagara University for more than 37
years and was an avid sports fan, particu-
larly of NU Purple Eagles basketball, and
developed long-lasting relationships with
many of her students, particularly Calvin
Murphy and Marshall Wingate.
She and her husband, Lester M. Gould,
spent wonderful summers each year in
Bay Beach, Ontario, where they sunned,
played tennis and established relationships
with many dear friends over the years.
She was active in local
theater for many years play-
ing Kate in the Taming of the
Shrew and Martha in Who's
Afraid of Virginia Wolf.
Mrs. Gould was the first
woman president of Temple
Beth Israel, which was found-
ed by her maternal grandfa-
ther and for which her father
and late brother, Paul Lunken,
also served as president.
A one-time president of the New York
State Speech Association, Mrs. Gould was
an avid bowler, quilter and knitter and
was constantly working on one project or
another for one of her nine grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters and
sons-in-law, Laurie and Mark Blinder
of West Bloomfield, and Wendy and
Lawrence Kohlenberg of West Bloomfield;

Joan Cohen of Connecticut, and Keith
and Ellen Cohen of Pennsylvania; grand-
children, Rebecca Blinder and Erik Mets,
Benjamin Blinder, Rachel Cohen, Annie
Cohen, Maddy Cohen, Emily Cohen,
Gabriel Cohen, Jared Kohlenberg and
Liza Kohlenberg; sister-in-law, Hedria
Lunken Saltzman and her husband, Robert
Saltzman. She is also survived by Paul and
Hedria's children, Nettie, Yona and David,
and their families.
Mrs. Gould was the beloved wife of the
late Lester M. Gould; the dear sister of the
late Paul Lunken.
Interment was at Beth Israel Cemetery.
