Stahl Center for Jewish Studies and a pro-
fessor in the department of foreign lan-
guages and literature at the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He will speak on
Inventing the Modern Jewish Stage. The
author of a book by the same name pub-
lished this year by Wayne State University
Press, Berkowitz will explain how this
popular entertainment was shaped by
its creators' responses to changing social
and political conditions, trace the devel-
opment of modern Yiddish drama and
discuss the diversity of modern Yiddish
theater. A book signing will follow the
