Nabeel Abboud-Ashkar, co-founder
and director of the Polyphony
Foundation, and Joel Kahn

examples of "bridging the divide

through music:' Several members
of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra
that were in attendance that eve-
ning marveled at the children's
musical abilities.
Based on that visit, the
Maimonides Medical Society of
JFMD planned a visit to Nazareth
to visit the Polyphony Conservatory
within the Partnership2Gether
region on Nov. 5. The group of 42
medical professionals and spouses,
including Federation CEO Scott
Kaufman, were warmly greeted by
Abboud-Ashkar and his musicians.
We watched music lessons taking
place in the school, typically Jewish
teachers from Tel-Aviv working
with Arabic children. We then were
treated to a concert of five pieces of
classical music featuring Schubert,
Rachmininov, Mozart and Bach.
The last piece featured Dan
Weinstein, a talented Israeli cel-
list playing with his student Ziad
Qassem and featuring a duet by
Boccherini. As the fingers flew and
the notes danced, the bridge across
Jewish and Arabic cultures was eas-
ily seen. The group was treated to
a standing ovation of thunderous
applause by our Detroit medical
group.
The youngest member of
Polyphony is an 8-year-old boy, and
his father, Dr. Adi Francis, spoke to
the group. This local cardiologist
in Nazareth, who also serves on the
board of Polyphony, described the
life-changing positive effects the
music group is having on the stu-
dents and their families — and in
the whole region. The concert con-
cluded with great friendship over a
snack of Arabic coffee and baklava.
The Polyphony ensemble will
be returning to Detroit Dec. 20 at
7:30 p.m. to perform at the Berman
Theater at the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield,
along with David Broza, a noted
Sephardic vocalist and guitarist.
