Even though Leah succumbed to leukemia last December at age 62, she is still giving back to people in need. "Leah was first diagnosed with non- Hodgkin's lymphoma in late 2000:' said her husband of 41 years, Jeff Davidson of Birmingham. "Leah was very spiri- tual and was a big Jeff Davidson believer in integra- tive therapies. These techniques are supplemental to medical treatment and provide comfort to the soul:' During the time that she was being treated for cancer, Leah instituted and led meditation classes and spear- headed the formation of the Women's Support Group. Today, those who are battling cancer can take advantage of these free, com- plementary therapies at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute's Lawrence & Idell Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center in Farmington Hills. Those therapies, made avail- able through Leah's iniative when she was being treated at Karmanos' Farmington Hills facility, include reiki (a Japanese technique for stress reduc- tion and relaxation that also promotes Leah Davidson healing), tai chi (which incorporates soft, flowing movements to promote relaxation and health), meditation, yoga, massage and guided imagery therapy (a system of visualization that promotes relaxation). Healthier Frame Of Mind One cancer survivor who has benefit- ted from tai chi classes at Karmanos is Craig Kirby, 63, of West Bloomfield. Kirby was diagnosed with stage III fol- licular cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2004. At the time, Kirby thought the diagnosis was a death sentence. "I figured I was dead, dead and dead:' he said. "When you're going through these tests, your head is spin- ning. There is a time when you have to take a leap of faith and put your trust in someone else:' Kirby said tai chi at Karmanos has helped him gain a healthier frame of mind and a greater level of energy that has deepened his own spirituality. Kirby is considered to be in remission
