embers of the Linden String
Quartet are going public —
locally.
Last year, they were in Michigan
for school performances and a private
concert under the sponsorship of the
Chamber Music Society of Detroit.
This year, they will be returning for
more school performances under the
sponsorship of the CMSD as well as a
concert open to the public, which also
features acclaimed clarinetist Richard
Stoltzman and pianist David Deveau.
The quartet, friends before they estab-
lished a working arrangement, will appear
Saturday evening, Nov. 17, at the Seligman
Performing Arts Center in Beverly Hills.
Featured works will be by Beethoven,
Bernstein, Sculthorpe and Mozart.
"This will be a fun program:' says Felix
Umansky, 27, describing his quartet in a
phone conversation. "The early Beethoven
work (String Quartet in C minor, Op.18,
No. 4) we're performing is perhaps one
of the most popular string quartets in C
minor.
"I think it's really interesting how
Beethoven [through this piece] is begin-
ning to come into his own as a composer.
He's taking what he loved so much about
Haydn's string quartets before moving on
to break the rules and the molds.
"With this piece, he's trying to be the
dramatist we all know him to be. At the
same time, it comes across as almost a
little melodramatic, which makes the
piece more fun to play"
Although the group has performed
Mozart's Quintet for Clarinet and Strings
in A major, K 581, this presentation has
a different cast.
"The Mozart quintet is such an incred-
ibly beautiful piece Umansky says. "It's
going to be a joy and a pleasure to be
playing it with Richard Stoltzman," mak-
ing his first appearance in the CMSD
series in a decade.
The Linden String Quartet, together
since 2008, includes violinists Sarah
McElravy, Catherine Cosbey and Eric
Wong, who with Umansky have shared
many impressive stages. They have
appeared, for example, at Carnegie
Hall in New York City and the Ravinia
Festival in Chicago.
Among recent achievements has been
winning the 2010 Concert Artists Guild
Competition, the mission of which is to
discover, nurture and promote young
musicians.
"The four of us came together because
we all loved string quartets and decided
to give it a shot:' says Umansky, who
earned his bachelor's and a master's
degree at the Cleveland Institute of
Music. "We enjoyed each other's company
and admired each other's musicianship:'
Umansky's interest in music builds
on the careers of his parents, Polina
Umansky, cellist with the Lafayette
Symphony Orchestra in Indiana and
Owensboro Symphony Orchestra in
Kentucky, and Konstantin Umansky,
violinist with the Indianapolis
Symphony Orchestra.
"Music was always in my ears, and I
was drawn to the sound of the cello:' Felix
Umansky says. "There was something that
closely represented the human voice.
"My mother became my first teacher
when I was 7, but it wasn't until I was
entering high school that I decided the
cello would be my career. The chamber
music repertoire is incredible, and it's
such an intimate medium:'
The Linden cellist, now living in
Cleveland, grew up in Indianapolis where
he attended temple services. He was
involved with the Hillel Foundation when
the quartet was the Graduate String-
Quartet-in-Residence at Yale University in
New Haven, Ct.
"We're doing more and more outreach
concerts as we'll be doing in the Detroit
area: says Umansky, who is single. "We'll
be doing those the week leading up to our
performance.
"Outreach is an incredibly important
aspect of performance. We learn a lot
about ourselves and our playing, and it can
attract, influence and inspire children:' ❑
The Linden String Quartet will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov.17, at the
Seligman Performing Arts Center, 22305 W.13 Mile, in Beverly Hills. There
will be a Pre-Concert Conversation from 6:45-7:30 p.m. $15-$60. (248)
