Steve Stein I Contributing Writer I Andrew Cahn t hasn't taken long for Andrew Calm to make an impact on the Western Michigan University men's tennis team. The freshman from West Bloomfield High went 10-7 this fall in singles matches. That was the most singles wins on his team. Coach Dave Morin was impressed. "I could tell when I was recruiting Andrew that he'd be a good college player. So far, he's been all that and more he said. "He's very coachable. He takes what he learns on the practice court and uses it on the match court. He's smart, he's Andrew Cahn a hard worker and he's competitive. He's going to be a mainstay here for four years." Cahn said the fast start surprised him a little. "I was confident I'd do well, but I didn't think I'd do this well; he said. Bringing Cahn to WMU was a recruiting coup for Morin because Cahn was named Mr. Tennis last fall by the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches' Association. He went 21-2 at No. 1 singles for West Bloomfield and finished second in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 state tournament. His only losses — in his first and fmal matches of the season — were to Northville's Tyler Gardiner, a highly ranked United States Tennis Association junior player. Morin said Calm is doing well off the court at WMU, both in the classroom and making the adjustment to living on his own. "It can be a tough transition from high school to college the coach said. "Suddenly, you have to make many more decisions. There's a lot more freedom. That's why we try to keep our program structured as much as we can:" College tennis players compete in tourna- ments in the fall. No team scores are kept. In the spring, players compete in singles and doubles flights for their team. Morin sees Cahn occupying the No. 4 or No. 5 spot in the Broncos' six-player singles lineup. "But he could move up, of course he said. There's a chance Cahn also could be in WMU's doubles lineup. Cahn went 2-8 in doubles this fall, but Morin said the record is misleading because the Broncos' doubles teams struggled as the coach tried to fmd the right combinations. "Andrew has the winning mentality and the weapons to play well in doubles:' Morin said. So does Cahn prefer to play singles or doubles? "I have more fun playing doubles, but I'm better at singles right now, so I don't know:' he said. WMU is a power in Mid-American Conference men's tennis. The Broncos have won six of the last seven MAC tournaments — they lost in the semifinals to Ball State in 2011 — and they've won four conference regular-season titles during the stretch. Morin is confident Cahn will impress MAC coaches in the spring. So much so that he feels Cahn could be a candidate for all- conference honors. Cahn's career record at West Bloomfield was 87-14. He played No. 2 singles as a freshman and sophomore, and No. 1 singles as a junior and senior. He was named to the Division 1 All- State Team by the Coaches' Association as a junior and senior, and he played in the MHSAA state tournament three times, losing in the semifinals as a freshman and junior. Back in 2008, before Cahn's fresh- man season at West Bloomfield, he won a gold medal in tennis in the U14 Boys Competitive White Division at the JCC Maccabi Games held in the Detroit area. He won all eight matches he played in straight sets. Mr. 800 Congratulations to Dave Shanbaum of the B'nai B'rith Eddie Jacobson League for achieving a bowling rarity, an 800 series. He rolled 276-257-289--813 on Oct. 29 at Country Lanes in Farmington Hills. It was the third 800 series of his career, and the second-highest series in league history. ❑ Send news to sports@thejewishnews.com . THIS MOMENT is brought to you by Karmanos. Better treatments.
