Temple Kol Rabbi Ernst Ami will honor the Conrad memory of the late Rabbi Ernst J. Conrad, its founding rabbi, over the weekend in conjunction with the Muslim Unity Center of Bloomfield Hills. Beginning on Friday, Nov. 16, with Shabbat worship at 7:30 p.m. at the synagogue, Kol Ami will celebrate Rabbi Conrad's commitment to interfaith dia- logue. The service will be followed by a discussion of Jewish and Muslim sacred texts, co-sponsored by the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding. A special concert highlighting the themes of brotherhood, justice and peace, which were so important to Rabbi Conrad, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m. at Kol Ami. The program will feature Nathalie Conrad, music director emerita; Helen Kerwin, piano; Tamara Sherman, Aaron Levett and Leah Pernick on violin; and sopranos Tiffany Green and Marci Shulman. The concert is free and open to the community. Kol Ami members will participate in a cultural exchange at the Muslim Unity Center on Sunday, Nov. 18, in the after- noon. Members of the Downtown Synagogue will join with members of the Muslim Center of Detroit for worship, discus- sion, fellowship and education about religious practices, customs and beliefs. At 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, a prayer ser- vice will be held at the Muslim Center, 1605 W. Davison in Detroit, followed by a reception in the Jazz Cafe. At 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, a prayer service will be held at the Downtown Synagogue, 1457 Griswold in Detroit, followed by lunch. BBYO Launches 'Beyond' - A Gap Year Israel Experience BBYO launched a new pre-college, gap- year program in Israel called Beyond (www.beyondyear.org). Beyond is BBYO's first gap-year offering amongst its fast-growing menu of Israel experi- ences offered under its Passport brand. The program brings together four significant partners, including Authentic Israel, Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, Masa Israel Journey and Tel Aviv University to offer a powerful academic experience along with service opportunities, leadership programming and travel. Beyond applicants can choose between a five-month and a nine-month experience, both of which are eligible for an automatic Masa scholarship of $1,000, with up to $3,000 more being available based on financial need. With Tel Aviv University serving as the pro- gram's home base, participants have additional opportunities to explore Europe, engage in community service in Africa and develop new skills like scuba diving and cooking. JFS Offers Health Program For Adult Type II Diabetics Wellness Empowers is a new free program of Jewish Family Service of Metropolitan Detroit that offers biweekly life coaching, walking groups, exercise and fitness classes, and seminars on nutrition, healthy cooking and stress reduction. This program is available for 100 adults with Type II Diabetes that meet the eligibility criteria. Young Pleads Guilty, Gets 10 Days Community Service Former Tigers designated hitter Delmon Young has pleaded guilty to aggravated harass- ment for shouting an anti-Semitic slur and tackling a man to the ground out- Delmon Young side a Manhattan hotel on April 27. Young, 27, was ordered to complete 10 days of community service and enroll in a program that teaches tolerance. If Young completes the program success- fully he'll be able to withdraw his plea and plead guilty to a lesser charge. F.
