isiting Ferndale today you
have to squint pretty hard
to imagine the Ferndale of
the early 1980s. Back then, visitors
might have spent hours at Sam's Jams
legendary record shop on Nine Mile,
then shared the streets with the cli-
entele coming and going from Studio
North, the adult film theater on
Woodward, now home to the Magic
Bag. Later in the evening, they all
might have ducked into the Rialto
diner (now Dino's Lounge) for a
bite, sure to gossip about the famous
shooting that took place there in
1984.
Ferndale's fortunes have changed,
and we're all the richer for it. But a
vestige of those coarser times seems
to linger in the city's air. Ferndale,
full of retail and nightlife, still attracts
edgier crowds and seems unwill-
