The quaint small-town
feeling of Northville belies
the enormous amount of
retail therapy to be had.
hough Northville is smaller
than most of our other shop-
pable cities, its unassuming
feel is the perfect anecdote to the
well-trod streets of some of Metro
Detroit's more obvious shopping des-
tinations. And — as residents and
regulars attest — that small-town
vibe can allow you to quickly become
a "regular" at many of Northville's 75
shops, boutiques and restaurants.
Named for its location in relation
to Plymouth — north, that is — the
city actually straddles both Oakland
and Wayne counties. Commerce
in Northville can be traced back to
1827, when a tailor, physician, tav-
ern, cobbler and two blacksmiths
began to attract visitors from the
surrounding area. Henry Ford
spurred the city's growth in 1919 by
opening a factory there, which made
valves for many of his automobiles
until it shut down in 1981. (Offices
and a health club now occupy the
spot.)

Today the intersection of North
Center and East Main streets is the
hub of Northville's shopping action,
with Dunlap and Cady streets (both
named after early settlers) to the
north and south, and Wing and
Griswold streets to the west and east
forming the rough district boundar-
ies.
Few chains have moved in just yet,
leaving the quaint streets to inde-
pendent businesses. You don't have
to walk far to find some true gems
among the shops and restaurants
along its tree-lined streets. Check
