Three Asian Gems

Shangri-La restaurants offer delights for every palate and pocketbook.

p

OTPOURRI

It took her almost 19 years to
admit that she was wrong ... At
least in this respect ... And a little stub-
born as well.
But Cholada Chan feels a lot better now
that she finally gave in and did what so
many of her customers had continually
asked for.
Cholada's flagship of her three award-
winning Chinese/Asian restaurants ...
Shangri-La West Bloomfield in the Orchard
Mall, Orchard Lake Road
and 15 Mile ... along
with her Shangri-La
Farmington Hills, 12
Mile and Middlebelt
recently made a lot of
people mighty happy
with 23 complete favorite
Chinese entrees that now
Cholada Chan
also include soup, egg
roll and rice ... And all at
$10.95 complete ... even
those previously listed at higher prices ...
served dine-in only, Monday-Thursday, 4-9
p.m.
It's a big step for her with much-request-
ed items that include shrimp with lobster
sauce, Chinese fried shrimp, pepper steak,
orange or sesame chicken, almond bone-
less chicken, etc.
This is Shangri-La West Bloomfield's
19th year ... Her other two, Shangri-La
Farmington Hills, serving Chinese and
Thai menus ... and Shangri-La Midtown
on Cass, with dim sum, Chinese and sushi
... opened three years ago.
Cholada has received numerous acco-
lades on having one of the finest selections
of dim sum in the Midwest ... This is
attested to by the numerous Asian people
who regularly come to Shangri-La West
Bloomfield and Shangri-La Midtown ...

Their enjoyment of the won-
derful grouping of Chinese
appetizer-like bite-size goodies
at two of Cholada's three res-
taurants is seven days a week
... Monday through Thursday
all day and evening; Friday,
11 a.m.-3 p.m.; Saturday and
Sunday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. ... Then
again, Friday, Saturday and
Sunday 10 p.m.-2 a.m. with so
many Asian restaurateurs hur-
rying over to Shangri-La for the
dim sum they wished they carried in their
own restaurants.
THE LIGHTS went out in a flash ... But
not long enough for the huge dining room
throng not to look around and notice the
over-capacity crowd that attended the 28th
annual Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame Induction Dinner.
It was the largest since David Blatt,
executive director, and his wife, Hedy,
community relations director, took over the
Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation reins
in 2009.
More than 300 jammed the Jewish
Community Center's Handleman Hall to
sit at tables and walk to various stations for
their all-dairy dinner selections ... Salad
with Caesar dressing was good, poached
salmon a big choice, potential takers of
potato lathes disappointed with no sour
cream or apple sauce available, and many
diners guarded their forks, used or not,
because there weren't enough for second
trips.
Then on to beautiful Berman Center
for a classy-looking induction ceremony
appropriately run by MJSHF President
Jeffrey Cohen, with master of ceremonies
Mike "Stoney" Stone doing his usual fine
job.
Shirley Foon Wiss, wife of the late
Al Foon, whose visionary idea for this

wonderful organization with
charitable work that has been
well chronicled, looked at the
large crowd as she slyly slipped
me a clean fork and softly said,
"Al was always so proud of the
turnouts."
Former New York Yankees
and Los Angeles Dodgers
manager Joe Tone will receive
the Hank Greenberg Memorial
Lifetime Achievement
Award, at the Greenberg
Golf Invitational, June 3, 2013, Franklin
Country Club.
QUESTION & ANSWER DEPT. ...
Many folks have asked about the excel-
lent white bean relish served at the former
Joe Muer Seafood on Gratiot ... and now
at the new Joe Muer Seafood in Detroit's
Renaissance Center, created by Susan
Malberg Muer, wife of the first Joe Muer,
grandfather of the present Joe Muer III.
Thanks to Jim Oppat, executive chef of
the Andiamo Restaurant Group, which
owns Joe Muer Seafood, here is the recipe
that so many have requested.
Great Northern Beans are soaked over-
night and rinsed very well before being
cooked in just enough liquid to cover them
... Once tender, they are cooled and the
liquid reserved to make the dressing ... It
is then simply a blend of the rich, protein-
based cooking liquid from the beans, white
vinegar, salt, white pepper and parsley ...
The cooked beans are combined with pimen-
tos and diced onions to finish the relish.
IN NEW YORK, another Sandy Levine

wife, Marian Levine, whose father, Milton
Parker, was partner with Leo Steiner, for-
mer owners.
The Sandy Levine here is sole owner of

VISITING HERE recently from Los
Angeles with wife, Dorothy, former localite
Sam Essick extolled luscious virtues about
the Coney Dog eatery there on Sunset
Boulevard ... It is the tasty touch of Detroit
that so many former Detroiters can never
forget ... They love the Coney Dog there
because of its unforgettable "Detroit Style"
as on the logo for the 100 percent all-beef
bites with the same chili, too.
While Sam usually takes back a 5-pound
loaf block of the same exact chili shipped
to Coney Dog for its own goodies ... It is
not sold in bulk at Coney Dog in LA.
So many other Detroit remembrances at
the Coney Dog, like Faygo pop, Stroh's beer,
Sander's hot fudge, Vernor's ginger ale,
etc. ... While watching the Detroit Tigers
baseball games and Detroit Lions football
contests on the restaurant's televisions.
Sam and Dorothy visited and stayed at
the West Bloomfield home of her sister
Alice Cantor.
OLDIE BUT GOODIE DEPT. ... The
husband and wife were getting ready to go
out to dinner ... She came out of the bed-
room and asked him, "Honey, do you want
me to wear this Chanel suit or the Gucci
outfit?" ... "What do I care?" he said.
The wife then asked, "Darling, should I
wear my Rolex or my Cartier watch?" ...
"Who gives a dam?" he tells her ... She then
asked, "Honey, should I wear my 5-carat
pear or my 6-carat round diamond?"
"Hey," said the husband. "If you don't get
your act together, and soon, we're going to
miss the Early Bird Special:'
