Camper-turned-JOIN intern sees what it
takes to run Tamarack Camps.

p

rior to ever attending Tamarack Camps, my older brothers, Bryan and Allen, were already

introducing me to the camp lifestyle. They made me eat "doodle" (a yummy dessert made
of uncooked brownie mix and water), they crafted ceramic cups for me, and they taught

me camp songs. You can say they were prepping me for my first summer as a Shiffman camper in
1997. As soon as I arrived at Camp Maas that summer, everything just clicked.

DINE letlifiTUS!'

I immediately got into the swing of things, embracing color wars and camping trips. I found
my home. During my nine years as a Tamarack camper, I spent seven
years at Camp Maas, two years at Charles N. Agree Outpost Camp and
the summer of 2008 as a Teen Tripper at Agree Outpost.

After taking three summers off from Tamarack Camps to pursue
other passions, I once again found myself back at Tamarack. This past

winter I applied for the Jeanette and Oscar Cook Jewish Occupational

Intern Program (JOIN) and was chosen as a finalist. This summer, I
had the privilege of working as a JOIN intern for the development

department of Tamarack Camps. JOIN is organized by JVS and places

16 dedicated college students into positions within the Jewish com-
munity. JOIN interns work at their assigned agency four days a week

and one day is spent touring and learning about Jewish organizations
in our community.

JOIN is not your typical summer internship. I was not making cop-
ies or on coffee runs. I had a large office with a window and worked
out of the Tamarack Camps office in Bloomfield Hills. A majority of my time was spent on social

media trying to locate and engage alumni of the organization.

I have seen Tamarack Camps from many different perspectives. Each view has given me a

different insight into the workings of this organization. As a camper in Ortonville, I interpreted
Tamarack as a magical place with spontaneous programs, lots of spirit and fun hand-claps dur-

.

ing the after-meal prayer. During my time at Agree Outpost, I learned the value of backpacking
and the connection between nature and Judaism.

My perspective of Tamarack Camps has come full circle since my JOIN internship. I have a
clear grasp of donor stewardship, board relations and alumni involvement. Prior to this summer,

I was under the impression that Tamarack Camps was run solely on passion and staff energy.

This summer I realized that a lot of strategic planning, organization and dedication go into
making Tamarack Camps run smoothly.

I have come a long way since my days as a Shiffman camper. I still love the brownie mix
