through third-grade students in
schools in Detroit and Oakland
County through tutoring and
enrichment programs and book
drives. DJCL conducts training
workshops and provides resources
for its volunteer tutors. Repair the
World, a national organization
inspiring Jews to serve those in
need, joined forces with DJCL to
expand DJas outreach in Detroit
Public Schools. Each of these great
organizations has its strengths and
challenges.

Volunteers Needed

Beyond Basics has a proven meth-
od for getting children reading at
grade level. It has dedicated and
staffed rooms in the schools it ser-
vices. The challenge is recruiting
enough volunteer reading buddies
to work with all of the children
on a regular basis. DJCL has been
successful at recruiting volunteers
to read with Detroit children. The
challenge has been to develop a
consistent structure and schedules
within the schools in order to best
utilize their volunteers.
In short, Beyond Basics has an
established infrastructure in the
schools but needs more volunteers.
DJCL has the ability to recruit
volunteers but does not have much
of an infrastructure within the
schools. All the makings of a per-
fect shidduch (match).
A meeting
was recently
held with rep-
resentatives of
Beyond Basics,
the DJCL, Repair
the World and
its Americorps
VISTA fellows.
A collaboration
was established,
and these
organizations
will now work
together to
take advantage
of each other's
strengths to pro-

ability to read.
It was impres-

together for one

most impressive is none of these
organizations cares about who gets
the "credit" for success; each truly
just wants to help kids learn how
to read. When great organizations
and people such as those involved
in this collaboration come together
for a truly altruistic purpose, suc-
cess is guaranteed. I applaud their
efforts and the efforts of all of the
wonderful volunteers.
If you would like to be a part
of these amazing programs,
please join me on Friday, Nov. 2,
for "Literacy in Detroit: Be the
Solution," an informational presen-
tation on how you can help.
