Tapper's Begins Its 21st
Annual Winter Coat Drive
For 20 years, Tapper's Diamonds &
Fine Jewelry has hosted a coat drive
to help those in need enjoy a warmer
winter. This season's Tapper's 21st
Annual Coat Drive will be held Nov.
1-21, where local residents can sup-
port less fortunate neighbors by
dropping off warm winter items and
making cash donations at all Tapper's
locations.
"Our goal is to donate more than
2,500 coats, new hats, gloves and
blankets to those in need before
winter arrives," says Steven Tapper,
custom designer and vice president.
"Tapper's strongly believes in giving
back to our community, and with the
support of local businesses and gener-
ous residents, we hope to make this
our most successful effort ever."
The coat drive includes drop-off
bins at all Tapper's locations including
Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, Somerset
Collection in Troy and Orchard Mall
in West Bloomfield; Marlee's by
Tapper's at Twelve Oaks Mall; and
all 10 Tapper's Gold Exchange loca-
tions. Coats in all shapes or sizes are
welcome, and Tapper's handles dis-
tributing winter items, free of charge,
directly to local children and adults
and the organizations that support
them.
Tapper's will also accept cash dona-
tions that will be used toward the
purchase of new coats. A $20 dona-
tion will provide a child with a coat
and gloves. It is estimated this effort
has provided more than 35,700 winter
items to Metro Detroit-area families
throughout the years.
Call Steven Tapper at (248) 865-6320
to discuss business partnerships for the
Tapper's 21st Annual Coat Drive.

The event will also
feature a silent auction, a live auc-
tion, a raffle and an update on pan-
creatic cancer research.
The Sky Foundation was created
in 2008 by Sheila Sky Kasselman,
now a five-year survivor of pan-
creatic cancer. The foundation has
sponsored and funded research proj-
ects at Karmanos Cancer Institute
and Henry Ford Health System in
Detroit.
The goal of the ongoing research
is to develop a highly accurate, clini-
cally applicable screening test for
patients at high risk of pancreatic
cancer.
In addition, a project has begun
to address recurrent disease in
survivors of pancreatic cancer. The
team is developing a new way to
kill tumors of the pancreatic by
targeting the mutation in the K-ras
oncogenes. This technique is very
specific because 90 percent of ductal
adenocarcinomas (exocrine tumors)
of the pancreas have mutations in
their K-ras oncogenes. It will not
kill cells with normal (non-mutant)
K-ras genes; therefore, it should
have few side effects.
One member of the pancreatic
cancer research team is Michael A.
Tainsky, Ph.D., of the Karmanos
Cancer Institute and Wayne State
University.
Tickets start at $75. For reserva-
tions, call (248) 978-9845.
