RETAIN SUPREME COURT JUSTICE HMC Dinner To Honor Weisbergs T he Holocaust Memorial Center is hosting its 28th Anniversary Dinner, Sunday, Nov. 11, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield. . The event will honor Henrietta and Alvin Weisberg for their dedication and commitment to the HMC. Father Patrick Desbois, a Catholic priest who has devoted his life to con- fronting anti-Semitism and furthering Catholic-Jewish understanding as well as taking on the huge task of uncovering mass gravesites in Eastern Europe where Jews were killed dur- ing the Holocaust, is Fr. Patrick the keynote speaker. Desbois The Weisbergs are longtime benefactors to the HMC as well as Congregation Shaarey Zedek, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and Beaumont Hospital, among many other organizations. Recently, the couple made a generous gift to the HMC to fund construction of a permanent exhibit/gallery to house an authentic World War Thera boxcar used to transport Jews and other victims of the Holocaust to concentration camps. Henrietta Weisberg and her fam- ily were transported on such boxcars, which took them to various concentra- tion camps where most of her family perished. Only Henrietta and her sister, Rachel, survived. Having survived three concentration camps, Henrietta is pas- sionate about educating today's children about tolerance, the need to stand up for others and the importance of never for- getting those who perished and survived the Holocaust. Desbois and his organization Yahad- in Unum have received international acclaim for locating mass gravesites in Eastern Europe so that countless Jews killed during the Holocaust will no longer be forgotten. To date, Yahad-In Unum has identified more than 800 mass killing sites with more than 2,000 mass graves. Karen and Joel Kahn are chairing the annual fundraising event. Dinner tickets are $200 each or Double Chai at $360 each; tickets for those age 35 and under are $136 each. Table prices begin at $2,000. A preview of "Light from the Ashes:' an exhibit of pre-war photos opening in November, will be shown at 5 p.m., when the event begins. Reservations for dinner are required; complimentary valet parking will be pro- vided.
