In regards to Afghanistan, I do not support the administration plac- ing an arbitrary date on removing troops. This election is about who we are as Americans. It's about the future of the middle class and whether everyone has a fair shot at success. I believe we don't have an economy unless we make things and grow things. That is what we do in Michigan, and that is the key to our eco- nomic comeback. That is why I led the effort in the Senate to give our auto companies the tools they needed to turn things around, with retooling loans for advanced tech- nology vehicles and partnerships to invest in advanced batteries and other innovations. It is great to see all three of our Michigan automakers making profits again and hiring workers. As chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, I've brought Democrats and Republicans together to help our family farmers thrive so we have more Michigan-grown products in our supermarkets and schools, and new opportunities to create jobs in food pro- cessing and bio manufacturing. It's also time to stop rewarding compa- nies for sending jobs overseas. Instead, we need to make it easier for companies to bring jobs home. My Bring Jobs Home Act stops giving tax breaks to corpora- tions that move jobs overseas and instead cuts taxes for U.S. companies that move jobs back to America. Hoekstra: Right now you see an anti- investment, anti-growth agenda com- ing out of Washington, D.C. We need to embrace pro-growth policies. This includes tax reform, regulatory reform, domestic energy reform, and spending reform that encourages investment and creates jobs. I will offer real solutions that preserve the safety net and create a pro-growth environment so everyone has opportunities to succeed. We also need to end reckless spending and balance the budget. As a member of the House Budget Committee in the 1990s, I was part of a team that got the job done by balancing the budget and creating surpluses. We can start by ending the wasteful and duplicative programs, including those that are better performed by local and state governments. Jewish News: Do you agree with the administration's actions regarding devel- oping our domestic energy resources and supporting alternative sources of energy? Stabenow: It is absolutely critical for our economy and our national security that we break our addiction to foreign oil. That is why I strongly agree that we need a "do it all" approach to energy, which includes increased domestic drilling for oil and natural gas along with a commit- ment to developing energy efficiency and renewable energy resources like wind and solar. As the co-chair of the bipartisan Manufacturing Caucus, I led efforts to create new partnerships with industry to create clean energy- jobs in advanced bat- teries, wind and solar technologies. These are the ideas that will create the jobs of the future — and, in fact, they already are, with Michigan now No. 1 in the country for new clean energy patents. Hoekstra: Unfortunately, the admin- istration has spent the past four years picking winners and losers, and the non-favored industries have suffered. The United States must adopt a long-term, multifaceted "all of the above" approach to addressing the current status of energy prices. For far too long, we have allowed ourselves to become dependent on foreign sources of energy, putting our economic and national security at risk. America could achieve energy indepen- dence. Congress must adopt a balanced energy plan that can increase production and promote conservation while protect- ing environmental priorities. Jewish News: Do you support a path to citizenship for American-born children of illegal immigrants? If so, what do you propose or support? Stabenow: I believe we must consider any reforms in our immigration system in a comprehensive and balanced manner, first and foremost taking into account our nation's security; the jobs of American workers, the rights of individuals and the economic interests of our state. I support legislation to address the status of chil- dren brought to America at a young age, commonly called the DREAM Act. My office is contacted by hundreds of Michigan citizens every year about their problems with our broken immigration system, and I am well aware of the urgent need for comprehensive reform. Hoekstra: The federal government is responsible for immigration policy but has failed its responsibility. I continue to advocate for rational, balanced immigra- tion reform that opposes amnesty, secures the border, does not award illegal behav- ior and utilizes a workable paperwork process. Workable and effective immigra- tion reform is an important objective and should certainly recognize our immigrant heritage and respect the enormous con- tributions of immigrants by encouraging and enforcing legal immigration.
