THE SCAN.OUS REIECTION OE

YY NASIDIC ROOTS

Unorthodox offers her perspective on the dangers of
all fundamentalisms as she portrays a community
where social norms are shunned and hidden, a group
virtually shut off from everyone else. Small yet
powerful, such communities know that the outside
world can only cause some to question their existence.

Few artists have the staying power of
Judy Collins. For more than 50 years,
she has delighted audiences with her
clear and lovely voice and played a
leading role in the careers of Jewish composers
and songwriters, popularizing songs by Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen,
Randy Newman and many more.

"[Unorthodox] describes an oppressive community in which secular education
is minimal, outsiders are feared and disdained, English-language books are
forbidden, mental illness is left untreated, abuse and other crimes go
unreported ... a surprisingly moving, well-written and vivid coming-of-age
tale."— The Jewish Week

Collins recorded 37 albums, has had multiple top-ten hits and Grammy
wins. She also is a best-selling author, political activist, Academy
Award-nominated documentary filmmaker and accomplished
watercolor artist.

Co-sponsored by B'nai B'rith International - Great Lakes Region, Henry & Delia
Meyers Library and Media Center

Collins is a classically trained pianist who moved
to the guitar when she was 16. Influenced by
songwriters like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger,
she became a fixture on the folk-rock music scene
and was the inspiration for the classic"Suite: Judy
Blue Eyes."Collins has dealt with great tragedy as
well as recovery, love as well as loss, success as
well as failure.

"... a fascinating and even harrowing musical and
personal reflection' — Kirkus Reviews

Join us for a delicious presentation and lunch
of Helen Nash's recipes.

"Collins' improbable and utterly charming tale of assuming iconic
status as a popular music star from the early 1960s onward also proves
a tremendously valuable chronicle of the early folk music scene... [A]
forthright, radiant work."- Publisher's Weekly (Starred Review)

Helen Nash was born in Poland and spent World War II
in labor camps in Siberia and Central Asia. She came
to the United States in 1949 and is today known as one of the country's
leading Jewish cookbook authors. Her classic publications, Kosher Cuisine
and Helen Nash's Kosher Kitchen, offer recipes that are not only kosher but
healthy, elegant and easy-to-prepare.

Please join us for a deeply personal account of Judy Collins' life and
