obituaries Local Doctor, A Renaissance Man D R. JOHN GREKIN, 95, of Bloomfield Hills, died Oct. 8, 2012. He lived a remarkably full life, pursu- ing his many interests with the joy and enthusiasm that characterized him. Dr. Grekin was born in Detroit on April 9, 1917, the son of Pauline and Joseph Grekin. He attended Highland Park Junior College and the University of Michigan. He graduated seventh in his class from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1941 and completed residency training in dermatology at the University of Michigan in 1944. From 1944 to 1946, he served as a captain in the Public Health Service in Savannah, Ga., caring for large numbers of U.S. servicemen. After completing his service, he returned to Detroit and opened a dermatology practice. In 1951, he and Oscar Schwartz became partners; and together they maintained a highly successful dermatol- ogy practice for more than 40 years. He was an adjunct professor at Wayne State University Medical School, where he gave yearly lectures on fungal dis- ease, his area of expertise; and he also served as the director of dermatology for Children's Hospital. Dr. Grekin retired from practice in 1997. He met Zivia (Zee) Seltzer in 1935 at Camp Nahelu where they were both counsel- ors and married her five years later. They created an amazingly successful partnership that lasted for 72 years, sustaining a mutual devotion through- out their lives. Despite the demands of a busy practice, he was a devoted father to his three chil- dren, generous with his time, supportive of all Dr. Grekin their endeavors and end- lessly loving. He filled his 95 years with adventure, learning and fun. He and his wife were world travel- ers for 50 years, visiting more than 130 countries. They ballooned over France, watched birds in the Pribiloff Islands, slept in tents in central Asia and were stranded in Bhutan. They savored every PETER R. DRESCHER, 57, of Whitmore Lake and Port Huron, died Oct. 7, 2012. He is survived by his beloved Micki; mother, Connie Drescher of Port Huron; children, Jaclyn, Aaron and Andrea; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Robin Drescher of Seattle, Wash.; neph- ew, Max Ryan Drescher; many loving family members and friends. For more than 30 years, Dr. Grekin orga- nized yearly theater trips to Stratford, Ontario, and Niagara on the Lake. He was an avid reader, not afraid to tackle challeng- ing works by Joyce, Proust and others. Dr. Grekin loved wine and became a local expert in fine wines. He was an avid golfer and a committed sports fan. Most of all, Dr. Grekin loved his family. He adored Zee and was adored in return. He was a con- stant source of love, support and counsel to his children and their spouses. His grandchildren had the privilege of grow- ing up near him and getting to know WILLIAM "BILL" GREENBAUM, 82, of Huntsville, Ala., died Oct. 12, 2012. He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Debbie and Bob Stanley, Lynne Greenbaum and Ann Sheree Greenbaum; three grandchildren; three great-grand- children; brother and sister-in-law, Cantor Samuel and Mona Greenbaum; sisters and brothers-in-law, Harriet and George Klein, Helen and Bruce Schwab, and Bobbie and Kenneth Jacobson.
