EDITH
SLEUTELBERG, 85,
of Southfield, for-
merly of Hudson,
Mich., died Oct, 9,
2012, peacefully in
UST
R
her sleep, surround-
ed by family, after a
long illness.
She was born in
Zaltbommel, the
Netherlands. She and
her late husband,
Simon, owned and
operated Meyer's
Dept. Stores, Hudson
Sleutelberg
Dry Goods and the
Town and Country Shop in Hudson,
Mich., for more than 50 years. They
were very philanthropic, supporting
many causes, including reading to
children at Lincoln Elementary School.
Mrs. Sleutelberg was a hidden
child Holocaust survivor from the
Netherlands. She spent two years
and seven months in the attic of the
farmhouse of the Krijn de Kock family.
During the war and since, they have
become her family; and their descen-
dants have remained close family to
this day.
She was an outgoing, social woman
who maintained dozens of dear friend-
ships in her native Holland through-
out her life. She celebrated her 80th
birthday there in the company of more
than 100 friends, 55 years after leaving
Holland.
She was active at Temple Beth Israel
in Jackson and Congregation Shir
Tikvah in Troy. She was on the library
board in Hudson and an active mem-
ber of the Friday Club and the Hudson
Women's Club. She attended the gath-
erings of the Hidden Children's group
in the Detroit area.
Seven years ago, she moved to the
Park at Trowbridge in Southfield,
where she is remembered as every-
one's dear friend. She took great joy in
helping the staff and residents, usu-
ally giving away Dutch chocolate rolls
and warmly welcoming new residents
while taking care of those needing
assistance. She never missed an activ-
ity and danced to the music at evening
concerts. She loved life and lived it
fully, believing that she had been liv-
ing on borrowed time since age 14,
when most of her extended family was
murdered.
Mrs. Sleutelberg is survived by her
children and their spouses, Drs. Ester
Sleutelberg and Steve Ratiner, Rabbi
Arnie Sleutelberg and Robert Crowe;
grandchildren, Ariel and Hannah
Kowalsky, Tracy and Jeremy Moy,
and Andy Ratiner; great-grandchild,
Naomi Moy; the de Kock family; many
