Judge Saves Guardian's
Glass Plant In Israel
A Guardian Industries architectural glass
plant in Israel, on the brink of closing, has
been saved for the time being by a judge's
ruling and remains open with its jobs
intact.
The plant, called Phoenicia America-
Israel (Flat) Ltd., named after an ancient
Semitic civilization, is located in Nazereth
Elit and is one of Guardian's 28 architec-
tural (flat) glass plants worldwide. The
Phoenicia plant opened in the 1930s
and was acquired by Auburn Hills-based
Guardian two years ago.
With about 400 employees, the plant was
slated for closure because of the depressed
European economy, which has resulted in
reduced glass sales. After several protests
in the community, "a judge stepped in and
appointed a trustee to run the operation:'
said Ralph Gerson, Guardian's executive
vice president. "It's similar to a Chapter 11
bankruptcy ruling in the U.S. when a busi-
ness must be reorganized:'
Guardian, one of the world's leading
manufacturers of architectural (flat) and
automotive glass, was founded 80 years
ago, and is now owned by the family of the
late Bill Davidson, who took over the busi-
ness in 1957.
