W ith the local and national elections just around the corner, here's an oppor- tunity to bring it home and get your kids passionate about politics — and inspire meaningful dinner-table con- versation. Teens can truly see democ- racy in action — and you can learn something, too — at Rock the Vote: Candidate Forum on Monday, Oct. 22. At this event, adults with and without teens, and teens with and without adults have the chance to meet, talk with and ask questions of senatorial contenders and judicial candidates about voting and the democratic process. Learn about the history of the Jewish vote, ask a senatorial candidate about the issues important to you or simply ask why and how they became involved in politics, and also meet your current and future judges before you go to the polls. The collaborative event, geared toward grades 8-12 and their families, will be a roundtable discussion with the senatorial and judicial candidates of the Oakland County Circuit Court, including U.S. Senate candidate Scotty tate Rep. Vicki Barnett, D-Farmington Hills, was dis- gusted by a negative robocall she received while preparing a Yom Kippur break-the-fast meal for her family that questioned her own patrio- tism for veterans. "The ethics of sending out robo- calls that don't rely on the truthful discussion of the issues, and then to be so insensitive to basically call Jewish homes on the Day of State Rep. Atonement, one of Vicki Barnett our holiest days, just shows a lack of concern on the part of whoever was doing them," she said. Barnett, running for her third and final two-year term as representative in the 37th District of Farmington and Farmington Hills, said the first nega- tive robocalls began in mid-September and made false allegations that she was against children saying the Pledge of Allegiance in school. She found the second set of robocalls questioning her support for veterans particularly upsetting. "I've gone out of my way to support not only the veterans who are returning from overseas right no but our veter- ans who have served in wars over the years:' she said. "... earlier this year, I introduced HR 292, which declared the week of June 25-29 'Service Disabled Veterans Business Awareness Week:" She said she wants Michigan to "... live up to their promise of setting aside 5 percent of Michigan state contracts to veteran-owned businesses. Those businesses will employ veterans; we're only at 1 percent now." Barnett said the campaign of her challenger Bruce Lilley claimed they did not know who was responsible for the robocalls. "If someone was doing something wrong on my behalf that I didn't like, I would call the Democratic Party and tell them to track down the group responsible and make them stop," she said. Lilley replied, "I am pleased to see Ms. Barnett agrees with me that my campaign has had nothing to do with nor any knowledge of these calls." Li
