Special to the Jewish News
A
nyone involved in orga-
nizational life knows who
to turn to when they need
help. For decades, Congregation Beth
Shalom's stalwarts have included
Barbara Goodman and her husband,
Paul.
Now the torch is being passed to a
younger generation. When there's work
to be done, Nancy and Avery Goldstein's
names are at the top of the call list.
Because of their ongoing support
for the synagogue, the Goodmans
and Goldsteins will be honored at this
year's Chai Life Celebration. The cel-
ebration is scheduled for Sunday, Nov.
4. It will include dinner and a silent
auction.
Barbara Goodman was the first
female president of Congregation Beth
Shalom when she served from 1981
to 1983. She's been on the synagogue
board for more than 30 years and on
the religious school board for more
than 40 years. She's currently serv-
ing on the Personnel Committee and
is deeply involved with the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit-
sponsored Congregational School
Improvement Initiative (CSI2) aimed
at improving the synagogue's religious
school.
Barbara was on the board of United
Hebrew Schools for many years and
was president in 1986-87, when it
transitioned into the Agency for Jewish
Education. She also serves on the
executive committee of the Zionist
Organization of America-Michigan
region.
Paul Goodman, who recently
retired as a pathologist from William
Paul and Barbara Goodman
Beaumont Hospital in Troy, has pro-
vided loving support and eaten more
than a few cold dinners when Barbara's
synagogue meetings interfered with
family meals.
"When I was president, we didn't
have an answering machine, and he
was a wonderful telephone-answerer
and message-taker:' said Barbara. Paul
was on the board of the Great Lakes
Yacht Club for many years and served
as its commodore in 1986. He is cur-
rently on the advisory board of the
Jewish Historical Society of Michigan.
Nancy and Avery Goldstein also are
big supporters of Jewish education.
Nancy, an English Language Learner
teacher at Doherty Elementary School
in West Bloomfield, has been on the
Beth Shalom school board for several
years and became its president in
2010. The Goldsteins' two children,
Max, 11, and Emily, 8, are students at
the school.
Nancy serves with Barbara on
the Program for Organization
Development (POD) Committee of
CSI2. She also has served as a trustee
for the congregation.
Avery, a chemist and attorney, runs
his own company, Patent Procurement
Services, in Birmingham. "He does a
lot of little things for the synagogue
behind the scenes," said Nancy. "If you
ask him to do anything, he'll help out
in any way." Avery has also been on
the board of Hillel of Metro Detroit for
many years.
Marcy Citron, Allen Goodman and
Janet Hankin are co-chairs of the 2012
Chai Life celebration. Tickets are $180
for dinner and a VIP reception and
$118 for the dinner alone. For more
information or reservations, call Beth
Shalom at (248) 547-7970. ❑
